Post #71  Postby SteveC » August 15th 2011, 4:39pm

Gentlemen, (please excuse xcuse me if there are ladies who are part of this group, but based upon the posts, it appears to be all men),I would LOVE to join your group. I will happily organize and bring wines one month. I have a fairly strong cellar (4,900 bottles and growing) and can furnish some very good wines to go with a great meal.

I am not sure if you are looking for an additional member, but if you are, I would love to join. I work in the city and live in Westchester.

Please let me know if there is an opening!

Thanks!

Steve, you're welcome to Join. There are great ladies in our group. I also leave in Westchester and if you love old world wines and have kids under age of 10 we should get together.

Leo,

My kids ages range from 8-13 (4 of them!). I love Old World. My collection is a mix of old and new, as I got on the California mailing list frenzy over a decade ago and bought way too many wines. I definitely prefer Old World, but have an appreciation for the new world as well.

Where in Westchester are you? I am in Chappaqua.

Leo, I will take October 2012. If something opens before then, let me know, and I will take it. July is the only bad month for me.

Caveat: I said that I would keep track of the months people were hosting. I am not in charge of anything. But,

In spite of Leo's assurances to the contrary -- and in spite of the fact that this thread and "club" bears Leo's name, it is not clear to me that we have an "open spot" at the moment. If you look upthread, you will see that Alan Chan came to the first first few, was absent for the past year or so, and is now looking to rejoin. We created a "first alternate" status for him -- so that when we are not full he is the next one in. If he winds up coming to a few more, he will probably host and would seem to have "dibs" on the next open spot. If you would like to have the same kind of status, that makes sense to me. The issue, of course, is that we already have more than 12 recurring hosts -- and even if we are only tasting, it is hard to divide a bottle more than 12 ways at a dinner. If a given date works for everyone, then someone who has hosted may wind up on a waiting list -- we want to avoid this. If we have space at a given event, there is no problem inviting other/additional people.

Of course, per the caveat, this is only my point of view and needs to be confirmed, challenged, etc. by the group. I invite others to comment.

No problem Gil. I didn't mean to step on toes. I would love to be on the waiting list if someone drops and something opens up, I would love to join/host.

Thanks

Alternate sounds good to me. As we said from the beginning, hosts will always have preference but we will be welcoming to new members. 90% of times we had spots open and had to invite random people so having two alternates should work fine.

Steve,

Maybe we should look into having Westchester edition of the Blind club as there's already a Long Island one.

No problem at this end. No toes were stepped on. You are offering to host a dinner, which is very generous. I am just trying to keep some "fair order" around the dinners. Steve, if you will PM me your direct email address, I will try to make sure hosts include it on their email invites with the understanding that you are an "alternate." (much of the "organization" of dinners now takes place away from the Board) As Leo points out, there is a fine line between having too many people and too few; so having alternates is great (though I don't remember any truly "random" people showing up ;) ).

It's getting complicated because there are two of us, and our attendance is sometimes two, sometimes one, sometimes none, but I think we should take October 2012 since I managed to blow March 2011 just to lose a gall bladder.

Would love to tag onto the next dinner or the next... I'll donate blind through the host, if host obliges, since hosting is not something I can easily do, living in southern NJ. (Fiancee is an opera singer in SUNY Purchase, so I'm in Westchester a lot).

Ajay,

We're pretty much full but sometimes dinners don't fill up and we post in offline planners if there's spot open. I live close to Purchase so shot me an email when you're here so we can share a bottle.

I have updated the first post to reflect discussions from last night (previous hosts not at the dinner should feel free to chime in here) -- Lazer/Levy scheduled for next November -- and Alan Chan added to the "future host" list -- tentatively for December 2012. Alan, please let me know if that month does not work for you or if there are any other issues. You retain "alternate" status until you host.

Let's discuss this on Sunday. If you take May, you are jumping ahead of me and Jeremy (and maybe Jay H. and/or the Lazer/Levys by the time we are in summer 2013) -- and all of that will affect whether Leo is up for September. I gave Salil March because he said his class schedule made it a much better month for him than several of the alternatives...
