Has anyone tried the Sierra Neveda / RRBC collabo yet?

Post #1  Postby Brian G r a f s t r o m » July 24th 2012, 10:36pm

it comes in a corked and caged 750 mL bottle (Bdx. shape) and is called "Brux". Brewed with Brett, and allegedly "will develop in the bottle for many a year."

anyone tried it yet?

Everything I've read says the tasters are disappointed because there isn't much Brett there yet. The Brett is part of the bottle conditioning yeast, so I'm not even touching one for another 8 months, maybe even into Fall/Winter 2013

I heard it hit town this week, so I will be on the lookout.

I asked b/c
1. I'm curious
2. I was thinking of buying one bottle or two bottles, depending

based on what Matt said, I might buy one and sock it away in my offsite for a couple years.

I have access to it and may try it. I don't like brett in my wine, so I may not like it in my beer. Just sayin'.

Exactly. Brett in beer is a wonderful thing. Wine...not so much.

I had it. Didn't like it enough to buy a second bottle but perhaps it is in need of some bottle time. Might have been my preconception about it being more bretty. At this stage Boulevards Saison Brett kicks Brux's ass up and down the street if you are looking for Brett. Nice beer but doesn't seem to separate itself like most RRV beers.

Did RRBÇ pioneer use of brett in beer or did someone do it elsewhere?

It's been done for a long time before RRBC.

It isn't bad, but two things working against it are:

A- Only in 750's
B- Price due to hype

When one considers that Orval and Rayon Vert from Green Flash are pretty much the same thing and I can get two Orvals or a four pack of RV for less, it makes me think I'm simply paying for the RR/SN names. I love both, but this is kind of a silly release IMO. I don't think cellaring this is going to do much for it. I'd lay dollars to donuts that the base beer is a Tripel and the hops actually add some complexity. I think a saison might have been a lot more interesting, but Boulevard kind of has that down already.

As does North Coast Brewing Co., with their beautiful "La Merle" (and it's affordable, too!) [cheers.gif]
