I've visited Caves Sao Joao several times and hand carried magnums back home. You're right, the prices are almost ridiculously inexpensive. I generally visit Portugal once or twice a year. I was supposed to go the first week in May, but that's now on hold. My current favorite winery is Herdade do Mo...

Welcome Tomas! I'm a huge fan of Portuguese wines. For me, table wines are nonfortified and less than Beerenauslese sweetness if botrytized. I have had some wonderful fortified wines lately. And you can drink fortified wines with food, but they don't meet the legal classification for table wines.

Barbeito has been playing around with Bastardo quite a bit recently. They've increased maceration times over the past few years and even have been using robotic lagars akin to Port production. After 3 or so years in canteiro the color is only vaguely red. After 5 or more, it's indistinguishable from...

DOP Madeirense is the classification of table wines made on the island. Mostly dreck ten or so years ago. They have improved dramatically lately due to the increased tourism on the island. It'll be up to the customs agent at it's port of entry whether or not they allow it in. Having paperwork showing you're moving back to the States is necessary. Actually Port is made with neutral grape spirits at 77% alcohol by volume. A classic technique used by the old time British wine merchants was adding a splash of ruby Port to a glass of too old red Bordeaux. It added a bit of fruit to a dried out wine. I've known quite a few winemakers who tinkered ...

Madeira revels in air. Many producers will repeatedly decant wines that have been in glass for a long time (decades) to refresh them. The 79 hasn't been in glass that long, but oxygen will certainly not hurt.

The Americans and Portuguese call these Colheitas. The Brits call them single harvest tawnies. The Grahams labels have used the term Colheita a couple times on their labels, but Taylor Fladgate never has.

The 1963 Grahams Single Harvest Tawny is going for $500.00 on the Symington's US website.
