Week 3 Virtual Tasting - Historic Vineyards hosted by Larry P for Peter Tryba Kidney Fund

Theme: Historic Vineyard wines from California
Host: Larry P
Co-host: Brian McBrearty & Morgan Twain-Peterson
Date: December 9th - 16th
Format: This week is about wines from the oldest vineyards in California. A number of WB’ers are involved in the preservation of the special places including Mike D, Mike O, Morgan TP, and this week’s host Larry P. Larry will donate $10 per tasting note from a historic vineyard to the Peter Tryba Kidney Transplant Fund. A list of vineyards is below so start searching your cellar but a few obvious producers are Bedrock, Ridge, Turley, & Carlisle for starters.

Raffle: Post a tasting note and you’re eligible for Anthony Lombardi’s random drawing for a free case of craft beer shipped to your door! You have to play to win.

Charity:
As many of you know, our own Peter Tryba is in urgent need of a new kidney. Good news is it looks like a donor is lined up with a potential transplant date in March. The fund goes to support all the cost associated with the transplant that is NOT covered by insurance (like expenses for the donor) and whatever funds remain after the transplant are transferred to another patient in the process. Here is a link to Peter’s transplant website. http://www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/peter-tryba-kidney-transplant-fund/153949

The kid is adorable.

If you’re interested in matching donation for this week’s notes then just post here and I’ll add you as a co-host or if you’d like to directly donate then visit the above link to his website. All major credit cards are accepted. [cheers.gif]

The Historic Vineyard Society organization is dedicated to the preservation of California’s historic vineyards. HVS’s Mission is accomplished through educating the wine-drinking public on the very special nature of this precious and depleting state, national and global resource. What qualifies as Historic? A currently producing California wine vineyard, original planting date no later than 1960, and at least 1/3 of existing producing vines can be traced back to original planting date. Boy, not many choices. Hope I can find something.

I’m eating so much humble pie that I’m getting fat. You guys and gals are incredibly generous and, once I’m off the wagon following surgery, I’ll be mentally toasting all of you with every bottle of wine I open.
Thank you!

All the best to you Peter, and Brig, thanks for the great writeup!

waits for Brig to come up with a CellarTracker link

That made me laugh. Best I can do is your CT cellar summarized by vineyard.

waits for better link

And narrowed to just California…

Suitable, but not your usual good work. I pulled the tab as its own window so I could compare the two lists side by side, and found only TWO that work - shame on me!

2002 Ridge Lytton Estate Petite Sirah is on deck!

[welldone.gif] I’ll be popping a 2010 Ridge Mazzoni Home Ranch tonight.

Some vineyards may not be obvious e.g. Ridge Geyserville is in fact Whitton Ranch.

Oh, sweet! Then I have three!

The others are… Scherrer? MacDonald?

Scherrer and Lytton

Do the Dirty and Rowdy Rosewood Vineyards, Redwood Valley, Mendocino wines qualify? The description of 85 year old vines seems to match the HVS description of Redwood Valley (planted in 1930s)? This is really an academic question, since I’m unlikely to open one of the few I have this young, but it makes me curious.

What about early 1990s Mondavi Reserve CS, which was primarily To Kalon? To Kalon seems to be limited to Sauvignon Blanc on the HVS site.

I’ll probably avoid uncertainty and just go with a McDowell Estate Syrah.

I believe the D&R do qualify. There are some corners of the state where the HVS database is still not complete. That’s a good wakeup call and I should talk to Hardy about those vineyards. If you open one of these, I’d give it a lot of air. We had a 2012 Shake Ridge which was good with air, and a 2013 Familiar which we gave several hours of air and felt the wine needs lots of time.

The only old vines left at ToKalon is the Sauvignon Blanc I-Block.

Turley week!

Donation made and Old vine cracked in support of Peter. Stay strong and fight the good fight brutha!

2008 Ravenswood Barricia Zin - classic old school Zin, subtle flavors, dried flowers, lean with good acidity and tannins. Winning!

2002 Ridge Petite Sirah Lytton Estate - USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley (12/9/2014)
12 year old wine or two year old wine? It’s hard to tell.this stuff is dark purple, and shows tons of black fruit. There is still matching tannin, so no hurry to drink these if you have them. Certainly gives me reason to bury my 2010 and 2011 Lytton Estate PS bottles.

I want to help. I opened a Carlisle Kirschenmann last night…that doesn’t qualify, given it’s damn near 100 years old? If not, then I’ll need to get cracking on some more choices.

Good work, Larry.
