2001 Ridge Monte Bello - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains (8/20/2015)
Went to Church & State and decided to go with this one as its been ages since I’ve opened a Monte Bello. Just a wonderful nose and a beautiful palate of fruit and a bit of earth on the finish. One of the more balanced and satisfying Cabs I’ve had in a while. Have one more and will try to hold it for another 5-10 years, but this was in a good place at 14 years old.
Over the years, I’ve moved away from California Cabs, but it is wines like this that bring me back. I am more and more drawn back to three classic wines: Ridge Monte Bello, Montelena, Spottswoode. You could add a handful of others including Mondavi Reserve and Mayacamas, but I only drink so much cab and I still like a few of the newer wineries like Myriad, etc.
