What are you buying in 2017? Allocations

#1 Post by Eric S n y d e r » January 9th, 2017, 1:01 pm

I'm at the point where my purchasing is way outpacing consumption - i typically drink 1 $10-$15 per week (weeknight, drink over 2 days), a $20-$30 once per week (weekend), and a $50+ bottle about once per month(occasion).
I know, I need to drink more of the good stuff, but because I started buying allocations in the last couple years, a lot of my stuff is really young (tons of 2014/2015).

As I near capacity, I'm looking at which allocations/clubs to keep vs drop. I also shop retail for about 50% of my purchases.

Here's my list as of now, with a few grouped by style:
Alban / Andremily / Saxum
Bedrock / Carlisle
Myriad / Rivers-Marie
Dirty & Rowdy
Foxen (should probably drop, as it's not a great QPR, but it's the first club I ever joined, on my 21st birthday no less).

Waitlisted:
Cayuse
SQN
Turley

What lists are you on in 2017?

Given that a job took me out of the US, I cut way back on lists. I used to be on a lot more...now just on Dirty and Rowdy/Ultramarine/Andremily. Have been on SQN waitlist for quite a while, maybe this is the year. The upside is when I get back in a couple of years everything will have a bit of bottle age on it!

Definitely
Bedrock - reason Zins are in my wheelhouse and can drink them up with zero guilt.
Once and Future
Roy Piper
Myriad - cabs only this year
Quivet - cabs only
Becklyn

Maybe:
Schrader - just made the list. only considering because of birth year.
And whatever random list I get added to!

Bedrock is on my list too, I just had a couple foxens for the first time and was not impressed. I also am planning on buying more Paolo Bea, Big Table Farm, and Albatreti or Il Marroneto Brunello.

Andremily
Aubert
Becklyn
Bedrock
Hammell Wine Alliance
Myriad
Outpost
Realm
Scarecrow
Schrader
Screaming Eagle
SQN

This is what I purchase annually. I realize some I could find in the secondary market for close to release price, but I enjoy the provenance afforded by purchasing directly.

My first post on WB, excited to join the community!

This past year I bought:
Proper
Becklyn
Rivers-Marie
Quivet
Carter
Reynvaan

Just put my firstborn in daycare this week so wine budget will be scaled back this year, only planning on buying Becklyn and Proper. Having said that, when those allocation emails hit my inbox it suuuure is hard to say no!

An impending move has me scaling way back in the first half of this year, for for financial and logistical reasons. My only "must buy" right now is Sandlands.

I can realistically buy about 12 cases this year. Any more than that and it will be stacked up in the floor. I hate decisions like this, but I'm thinking I have to have these:

Bedrock
Sandlands
Kutch
Rivers-Marie
Schramsberg
Carlisle
Chateau Montelena (futures)
Becklyn
Once & Future

That doesn't leave any room to go deep on anything.

Will have to decide between

No Girls
Once & Future
Outpost
Saxum
Drinkward-Peschon
Scarecrow
Copain
Cristom
Carlisle
Rhys
Continuum
Realm
Hayfork
Sandlands
Becklyn
MACDONALD
Lewelling
Schrader
Lillian
Vincent

This year I need to withdraw from at least half of my list.

Positive buzz.

My last futures purchases were 2014, I'm backfilling at this point as I really do prefer my Bordeaux with age on them.

Not sure yet. Getting cheap as I get older-and teenagers approaching college age don't help. Plus income is down a bit.

I need to see price points-dropped a couple last year.

Leaning towards more Berserker Day buying-feel like better deals. And get to try new wines/wineries.

This year, I am planning to buy more 2015 German wines. I think (hope) that I have bought about all the 2014 white Burgundies I will buy, as I want to drink these over the next few years and not worry about premox.

I will probably buy some more Champagne, and like always, some red Burgundy.

I want to emphasize more half bottles, when I can find them. Have been buying less expensive Burgundy and Bordeaux in half bottles when I can and really enjoyed doing this.

No lists anymore. Only purchase so far this year was 2 bottles of 2015 Merkelbach Urgluck to round out a case of prearrival wine that I hope will be delivered soon.

I have one really low auction bid pending for some Burgundy which I sort of hope to lose.

My intent (for what that's worth) is to skip February and make a moderate purchase of some Champagne in March. I still have a lot of pre-arrival wine due from my orders last year so every time I think of buying something I look at that list and stop myself.
Ripe fruit isn't necessarily a flaw.

This is the list I usually buy from. I either need to go smaller per purchase or start eliminating some. Last year I skipped a number of them in an attempt to cut back. This year I think I will just to spread the love a little more with three to four bottle purchases rather than buying a case from just a few.

Myriad
Bedrock
Drinkward Peschon
Sandlands
Quivet Cabernet

I dramatically cut my purchases in 2016 from years prior and plan to stick to limited buying, as my goal is to completely wean myself from offsite storage.

Some vintners I'm confident will be purchased in 2017:

- Ridge
- Aubert
- Littorai

All others I either haven't decided or will be skipping this year.
