TN: 2008 Billard-Gonnet - Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Bas (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard)

2008 Domaine Billard-Gonnet Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Bas - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru (1/2/2018)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over 2.5 hours on Day 1, then revisited on Day 2 –

NOSE: light/faint; red fruits with a touch of spice; very light/dilute; raspberry; medium-light rhubarb. Day 2: medicinal black cherry; floral; clean (not funky).

BODY: light violet-ruby color of light to medium-light depth, with slight bricking throughout; light bodied.

TASTE: medium-light spicy oak note; medium+ to high acidity; some drying tannin; fruit is red, and not very concentrated; very light and elegant, if not simply lacking stuffing; best described as lean; a spicy/gamey element stepped forward when paired with beef rib cap; gut impression score: 87 – 89. Day 2: seems a bit of oxidation has crept in over the past 24 hours; still lean; best consumed now, on Day 1, with some air. 1st bottle opened was corked. Still feel good about my gut impression score of 87-89.

2008 Domaine Billard-Gonnet Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Bas - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru (11/14/2019)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over a few hours –

NOSE: medium+ expressiveness, with red fruits, damp forest floor, and medium-light pine note; pleasant, light strawberry Twizzlers; better than previous bottle nearly two years ago.

BODY: medium-light bodied; dark ruby color of shallow depth.

TASTE: drying tannins; light red fruits; drying out?; high acidity; fruit is a bit thin; acid is a bit too high; poor QPR @ $50; gut impression score: 88 – 89, and that assumes one doesn’t mind decidedly light Pinots. This was probably at its best in its infancy; Drink Now.

2008 feels like a tad more modern version of 1996…drink em young or wait 25 years, lots of acid, but missing thay ferrous component in so many 1996s so far.
