Does anyone have a source for good wine region maps?
I’d especially love ones that get really down to the nitty gritty details of where the specific vineyard boundaries are and such, but they’re for putting up in a bar/lounge room so beauty is helpful too!
Don’t know which regions you’re looking for (US, elsewhere?) but many AVAs have advocacy components who might be able to help. You also might check with the governmental planning folks in the relevant counties. Must be some “official” maps out there.
I’m blanking out on the last name of Charlie, who has been building those terrific vineyard maps for major European regions using Google maps. Can’t find his website, either. He’s posted here many times, but the search engine doesn’t turn up anything (quelle surprise!). Someone must have some of those bookmarked.
Thanks for all the links everyone! specifically, I’d be looking more for old-world maps I would say. especially Piemonte and Burgundy Crus, and Bordeaux chateau holding sites. I was listening to the I’ll Drink to That with Ian d’Agata and the information he was giving was incredible, but being able to look at a map while listening would help it sink in much easier I think.
I agree. Wine Folly’s maps are great, and I have her book. I think even more detailed is my goal though. wine folly does a good job with general locations and overviews of regions, but I havent seen any that break down declinations of crus in Burgundy for example. to give an idea: my main consideration right now is to buy the Masnaghetti map books from RareWineCo
I missed out on the book, so I want to buy Masnaghetti’s map of Barolo. The map is $12.99 from Rare Wine Co. but shipping is another $12. That seems crazy to me for a map.
You can download the maps of Barolo and Barbaresco from the consorzio website :
Those are good for the basics, but nothing compared to the Masnaghetti maps and books.
BTW Alessandro is coming out with Barolo MGA Vol. II. Not a revision to the first Barolo book, but mostly new info including historical maps of the vineyards. I looked briefly at an advance copy at La Festa and just geeked out.
I will ask him. I didn’t know it was out of print. You can buy it used on Amazon for $300 and something. I thought that’s a ridiculous price, but then I realized I wouldn’t sell mine for $500 (unless I knew I could buy a new one for less).
Alessandro implied yes, but I haven’t seen Vol 2 in enough detail.
Edit to say that I have purchased two of the maps for my dad’s bar/dining room. He had them framed and they look really nice on the walls. I’d recommend them for what it sounds like you’re looking for.
