A Few Humdingers

2010 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Tillets: Very pure nose of lemon, citrus blossom and almond butter. It is light on its feet but lacks no richness and is a wine of great clarity and precision. Balance is exquisite and length impressive. Starting to drink wonderfully well.

2010 Bernard Boisson-Vadot Meursault Les Chevalières: There’s some mineral reduction to the aroma along with almond butter, white peach and preserved lemons. It is rich, direct, powerful and detailed in the mouth. The acidity is brisk and gives good support to all of the buttery, rich flavours. A delicious wine just starting to enter the drinking zone.

2008 Domaine Henri Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets: Upon opening this was a surly, meaty wine that was shut down hard and a bit clipped on the finish. The next day it had blossomed into a thing of beauty. There was a strong scent of violets and it was loaded with crunchy red berry fruits. There was a line of minerally acidity and it finished with good cut.

1980 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino: Has a touch of leather, tobacco and cedar to the aroma. It really breathes up and black cherry fruit intensifies at its heart. There’s a strand of licorice weaving through the flavour profile and it has good depth and the chewy finish is long and savoury.

1974 Vietti Barolo Castiglione: Really vibrant and punchy wine with a nose of red fruits, balsamic, menthol and truffle. It is amply fruited, with rich flavours of fruit, flora and earth. It has great presence and a finish that has crunch and persistence. Absolutely delicious now but plenty in the tank for further development.
1968 Aldo Conterno Barolo Bussia di Monforte: This is a wonderfully complex, savoury wine that is totally engaging the whole bottle through. It starts off with a whiff of hazelnut and teak. There’s a fragrant Indian spice that builds and it is a wine that has real depth and strength. With each sip the fruit flavours deepen and it is quite creamy in the mouth. It finishes with good cut and length is superb.

So is that 1968 is the same wine as the Giacomo Conterno Barolo? My understanding is that Aldo set out on his own in 1969 so anything predating 1969 under his label came from his portion of the family’s stocks, released later under his label.

Jeremy, do you think the 1974 Vietti Barolo Castiglione would be worth 200 smackers (with good provenance)?

I’m not sure William. It was terrific though.

Back up the Alfa at that price Leonard.

Alway enjoy your notes Jeremy. As you stated for the Roulot, they have great clarity and precision.
