TN: Barolo and Barbaresco tasting (Praelum Singapore)

Just tasted some Barolos / Barbarescos in Singapore (Praelum wine bar), and here are some notes.

Renato Ratti 2013 Rocche Dell’Annunziata
Very oaky, with rose petals on the nose. On the palate, red fruit, somewhat balanced, a full body on the mid palate and somewhat woody. No - not a fan of the modernist style of barolo.

Conterno 1996 Cascina Francia
Definitely more my cup of tea - lots of mushrooms and truffles on the nose; on the palate, menthol, mint, spices, licorice, somewhat lean but good elegance.

Conterno 1964
We also had a 1964 to try - this was good as expected with lots of truffles and soy sauce on the nose. On the palate, caramel, licorice, sweet candy, and some dried fruits. Almost port like in nature.

Gaja Costa Russi 1996
Probably one of the top wines of the tasting. On the nose, mushrooms, soy sauce and truffles. On the palate, soy sauce, licorice, candy, and some black fruit, some spices and pepper. Overall, very elegant and a great balance of elegance and power.

Bruno Giacosa Santo Stefano 2008
More lean in style; licorice on the nose. On the palate - sweet red fruit, licorice, spices, menthol. Somewhat elegant; dried fruit and raisins on the back palate.

Mascarello Monprivato 2011
One of the wines of the tasting. On the nose, red fruits and liquorice. On the palate - liquorice, red fruits, some savoury notes. Lean but savoury and one of the wines of the tasting. Delicious.

Amarone 2004 Quinterelli
I can see why it’s so well-hyped; soy on the nose; spices, sweet, dried fruit.

La Poia 2010
The violets and vanilla strike you on the nose. On the palate, you get the sweetness of the vanilla, with a good acidity and some candy on the finish.
