TN: 2012 Dönnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spätlese (Germany, Nahe)

It is a true mystery why I have not opened a single bottle of Dönnhoff since 2016, until now. The sheer pleasure this one provided is something that is not easy to find in a sub-20 € bottle of wine, outside of German Riesling in general, that is. Happy to see the light again.

Very classic and appealing on the nose: green apple, carambola, grapefruit, yeast and a slight whipper cream note. From the entry to the finish this is surprisingly gentle and mild-mannered on the palate. Sweetish for sure yet sporting a fine balance, for young Spätlese this drinks very well and fast while not lacking any acidity. Not the most complex wine and not nearly as laser-like as some at least at this point yet it is undeniably delicious with great length. Very attractive apple-driven fruit, more minerally towards the finish. Some might consider this to be in a bit of an awkward phase but I simply get plenty of enjoyment out of it, be it with take away Vietnamese, Spanish blue cheese or on its own. Can’t go wrong with Dönnhoff.
