Broc Cellars 2007 Cassia Grenache

My first experience with this producer, and a genuine winner. Apparently this is 100% grenache from Ventana Vineyard in Monterey. Unfined/unfiltered.

Dense garnet color, much deeper than I expected. Nose exhibits Szechuan pepper, leather, chocolate, and plum. Very up-front fruit with plenty of strawberry, plum, and watermelon, and notes of sandalwood, meat, and earth. Finishes long and smooth, with an earthy, comfortable palate presence for quite a while. I was quite surprised to see 14.9% listed; it doesn’t feel at all heavy or hot. A very well-structured, drinkable but still though-provoking bottling from a young producer. I will definitely be on the lookout for Broc.
