2014 italian wine suggestions

I want to hold several bottles of 2014 italian wines because that year holds sentimental memory. If it was YOUR pick which one would you buy? It’s YOUR choice so taste preference is according to you.

Difficult year in many regions, but Barbaresco did very well, so did Sicily (esp Etna Rossos). Barolo, Tuscany, and Veneto will have more variability. That’s my 2c off the top of my head

The 14 Produttori Barbaresco Riservas just hit our market and I’ve stocked up. Particularly on Paje and Rabaja.

Rabaja was top performer of a recent 2014 Produttori crus offline.

Barbaresco is definitely a good play.

I’d do both Gaja Costa Russi and Sottimano Pajore.

2014 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Poggio, superb

2014 Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Brunello di Montalcino, brilliant

any of the Produttori, including the classico

2014 Lisini Brunello, drank again 2 nights ago in Priocca, fantastic after 1 hr of air

2014 Giorgio Pelissero Vanotu - tasted for the fourth time 3 days ago at the winery - had to leave with three more bottles

Bookmarked your site.

Percarlo might work

Giacosa Rabaja is a masterpiece

Who made it?

Agreed on Burlotto, thought the Cannubi was better than the Monvigliero this vintage, at least at this young age.

How long are you holding them for? I’ve had the 14 Pergole Torte a few times and that should certainly be good in 15.

I believe it was Francesco Versio

I’ve never had it, but people at Cellar Tracker really like the 2014 Valentini Trebbiano d’Abruzzo; in fact, they like it so much that it’s currently the highest ranked vintage of this century [which is saying something]:

Valentini Trebbiano, all vintages
https://www.cellartracker.com/list.asp?Table=List&Wine=Azienda+Agricola+Valentini+Trebbiano+d’Abruzzo

And it’s still widely available in the channel:

https://www.wine-searcher.com/find/valentini+trebbiano+d+abruzz+italy/2014

The 2014 is also very popular at Vivino:

I want to drink it anytime from 2020 until I die. So any excellent 2014 would do since I can drink the earlier ones first.

IMO Pepe is a better choice

2014 Emidio Pepe Trebbiano d’Abruzzo

The notes read as though maybe it’s even more oxidative than the Valentini?

Paolo Bea hasn’t released much to the channel recently; other than the Santa Chiara, I can’t see anything later than about the 2012 vintage.

Fortunately, the 2014 Santa Chiara does have excellent reviews at both CT & VV:

2014 Paulo Bea Santa Chiara

I would keep an eye on Paolo Bea in the next few years, though - they often ship very large bottles [3L or more] to the USA - and if something like their 2014 Sagrantino Secco proved to be an outstanding wine, then you’d have the opportunity to invest in large formats.

Among their top bottlings, it does does appear that Mastorberardino made the “More Maiorum” in 2014, but it hasn’t yet arrived in the USA:

And among their basic bottlings, the Taurasi Radici [Normale] sounds like it’s a very solid wine:

PS: Mastroberardino has some gorgeous videos on their website:
