TN: 2003 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac)

  • 2003 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (1/2/2020)
Decanted 4 hrs. Looking at my last note on this was in Dec of 06, and I recall distinctly how the forward, ripe fruit dominated its youthful profile. 13 years later, this is like a chunky adolescence going through a growth spurt, and shaping out to its proper adult size. While still carrying a good deal of rich cassis goodness, there is a lot more apparent structure present, making for a more satisfying whole. Very classy and my guess is this has some years yet before it really hits it stride. (94 pts.)

Besides Les Grand Chenes and Gruaud Larose, this is one of my few meaningful 2003 Bordeaux purchases. Glad to hear that it has not become a roasted, sweet firewater freak show.

Had the 2003 LMHB (among others) recently with dinner, just a few days before Christmas. I didn’t expect much, and was pleasantly surprised given my past experiences with ‘03 Bdx in general.
