but sadly not by me. I was there and watched but did not buy. Probably the worst financial decision of my life. In fairness UKP 200,000 was a huge amount of money back then.
Christie’s held a single vendor auction on 16 June 1994, there was a morning, afternoon and an evening session (with nearly 850 lots) I went to the evening session out of interest. The auction also contained two “super lots”. One was in bond and the other duty paid. The duty paid evening super lot hammered for UKP 200k. 197 cases of wine, but wow check out what was included. I cannot even begin to imagine what this lot would be worth today, all with impeccable provenance and storage. Sigh - the clarity of hindsight…
I wonder why they listed it all as one lot instead of breaking it up. I guess there are some things in there that were not nearly as attractive as the bulk of it, but still… Does anyone know why they would have sold it that way?
It was a huge auction and there was 847 lots in total. Pretty much everything in the super lots was offered by the case as well. I only scanned the one lot not the entire catalogue
