The greatest wine purchase ever

but sadly not by me. I was there and watched but did not buy. Probably the worst financial decision of my life. In fairness UKP 200,000 was a huge amount of money back then.

Christie’s held a single vendor auction on 16 June 1994, there was a morning, afternoon and an evening session (with nearly 850 lots) I went to the evening session out of interest. The auction also contained two “super lots”. One was in bond and the other duty paid. The duty paid evening super lot hammered for UKP 200k. 197 cases of wine, but wow check out what was included. I cannot even begin to imagine what this lot would be worth today, all with impeccable provenance and storage. Sigh - the clarity of hindsight…

I wonder why they listed it all as one lot instead of breaking it up. I guess there are some things in there that were not nearly as attractive as the bulk of it, but still… Does anyone know why they would have sold it that way?

It was a huge auction and there was 847 lots in total. Pretty much everything in the super lots was offered by the case as well. I only scanned the one lot not the entire catalogue

Talk about wine porn. I doubt many investments would have outperformed this lot over the last 26 years.

wow that is insane. That’s like $375k in today’s inflation-adjusted dollars. Talk about buying a winning lottery ticket…

I bought a bottle of ‘85 Marcel Juge Cornas for $50 about two years ago. I haven’t opened it yet, but the provenance was excellent.

Not quite the same as above but also not bad either

Crazy, 72 bottles of Rayas 1978 CdP.

30 magnums of Chave Hermitage? Seriously

Not just Chave. 1978 Chave.

36 bottles of 61 La Chapelle

99 bottles of beer!

Now that’s a super lot- looks like 3,500,000 +. There’s a massive amount of great wine to drink there. Thanks for posting

I bought 2 cases of 1982 Leoville Poyferre for $9 a bottle, but I guess this tops that.

Do people still buy super lots like this? Could be a great new TLC show, like Storage Wars.

my best purchase—5 magnums of 90 La Tâche at $550 per.

I’ll admit I’m not familiar with Emile Champet Côte Rotie.

It’s worth tracking down, look for 2013 and 2010.

Impressive. I have a mag of the 1985, but did not make that kind of deal. It has still appreciated nicely.

WOW. I can’t imagine what that would bring today.
