I guess worst case scenario is charging you the difference, or canceling the orders?

I have ordered A LOT of wine using the referral codes. What is the worst case scenario here? They charge us full price for the orders?
How much is a lot?

Confirmed with retailmenot that it is max of $50 per purchase. I will go with cashback instead of MR points. Award charts are always degraded over time and partnerships could always be removed.
Max 7 transactions per month with retailmenot/wine.com

I was under the impression that RMN maxed out at $50 cash back for the entire offer, I.e. the 20% back on Wine.com that expires tomorrow. I already made one purchase and at ~$300 I maxed out that $50. Has anyone confirmed with RMN that it’s actually $50 per purchase using the same offer?

I confirmed with them today via email. $50 per purchase. Max 7x a month. So potentially $350 cashback

Already had a Wineaccess account set up through someone's referral sometime last month - forgot who but thanks!

Picked up the 2010 Rauzan Segla mentioned above along with 2003 Chateau Lafaurie Peyraguey 375ml for $39 (not the best price but wanted something close to $31). $170.25 after NY taxes, instant $50 from Amex to $120.25 along with 10% Cashback from TopCashback for a total of ~$103

My referrals below :)

Thanks Clifton!
I used your code for $50 off from Wine Access!

Here is my referral if someone needs to buy from Wine Access. Check your AMEX offer as well to combine the deal.

Going to state the obvious. Get another account and you'll have all those again. RMN will give you 30% back on StewardShip, so it'll only cost you $35 to not have stress over promo codes.
Yep. Opened up one for my wife. used the 7 codes, went through RetailMeNot. Bought 7 bottles of Krug Rose 1/2s at $70 each ($109 on the site) and 19 bottles of Arnot-Roberts 'Trout Gulch Chardonnay' for $30 each ($49.99 on the site), both after all the discounts and delivery and tax.

Excellent.

For the Retail Me Not cashback, if you push out the shipping until fall, does the cashback still post within 45 days, or not until it ships?

I suspect they will invalidate orders if there were negative value ones. I noticed the website is down too. Maybe folks are auto-generating tons of accounts and buying tons of bottles automatically?

Looks like we cleaned them out of Krug rose 375 in a couple of days. Nice job lads. I can’t believe people were netting these for ~$60 when the 750ml goes for $270.

With the coupon and 20% retailmenot cash back could be very attractive pricing.

I used one of the recent referral codes for the $25 off on wine.com. One time, on Sunday. It seems they are not fulfilling the order. I can't get an answer from them, but the order is gone from my order history.

Any order made with the referral code was against their terms/conditions. I mean, referring someone who isn't a new customer obviously shouldn't qualify anyone for a bonus.

Nothing in there about new customers. Is it unethical to use more than one of these referrals? I wasn't able to but I don't think it's unethical. We're internet "friends". They put those links out looking to drive customers to their website for whatever reason. Definitely not illegal. There's probably some line that could be crossed into fraud if you went out of your way to game their system.

I would argue that "refer" in this context necessarily implies referral of a new customer. That would be consistent with industry standards. Pretty sure everyone here would expect a referral link to operate in that way, which can be observed in the manner the members here jumped on this thing and knew right off it was a glitch. Whether or not it is illegal it may violate the specific terms of the offer.

A big run on these codes also seems like a great way to make them rethink coupon policy more broadly.

Look, I've certainly tried to buy things online that were probably mispriced or using coupon codes that probably weren't meant for me, so I'm loathe to be some sort of pearl-clutcher/moralizer, though I realize that's what i'm doing now. I'm not really commenting on legality - I am not a lawyer, but I certainly don't think anyone has anything to worry about legally here.

As far as new customers go, common sense would dictate that a referral bonus would be for a new customer. Additionally, while I can no longer find the referral page on their website, when I read it, it was pretty explicit that it was to be a referral for a new customer.

I think it's pretty unethical to use more than one referral as well. Do you think it's ethical to buy out every single 25 dollar wine on their website for free? At what point does it cross over from ethical to non-ethical? When you take 3 wines for free instead of 4?

"Refer your friends" has no mention or implication they need to be new wine.com customers so nothing "necessary" there at all. So I disagree.

Refer your friends and we'll send you $25 off for every valid referral."

"Refer your friends" has no mention or implication they need to be new wine.com customers so nothing "necessary" there at all. So I disagree.

So if it is referring an exist member. What are you referring them to?

Yeah, ha. Look we've beaten this to death but the email said "refer your friends and we'll give you $25 for each valid referral." Nothing else. The email said nothing about what a "valid referral" is so the assumption is that wine.com will determine what a valid referral is. They've got plenty of referral codes for new customers that only work for new customers so if that was their intent they would/should have put that same logic in place.

Obviously this was a big mistake on their part as it appeared to crash their site and the codes are no longer working and some order apparently were cancelled. Agree the jig might be up with these referral codes which would be too bad but good for my wallet.

Who would have guessed that stealing wouldn’t work out?
While it may be arguably unethical, it is not stealing.
What, exactly, is the argument for how that practice is ethical?
First, I am not taking the position that it is ethical. I am merely stating that stealing is clearly illegal and undoubtedly unethical, but using multiple coupon codes, that did not require any unauthorized access to their system, is definitely not stealing or illegal.

I contacted wine.com customer service and said I wanted to to either pay full price for the orders I placed with the referral codes that were not cancelled, or return them. They stated that would not be possible or needed, and said that the referral program is still a work in progress that they would be relaunching in the near future. In retrospect I regret placing referral orders, but I don't think its nearly as unethical as some are making it out to be, and not much more unethical than using multiple 100/300 coupons.

Yet you see no disconnect between recognizing it was a "big mistake on their part" and having no qualms about exploiting that mistake. So much gets made on this site of retailers' obligations to consumers, but turn the table and many are happy to exploit what they knowingly view as a mistake by a retailer.

Is there a difference between:
1. Using the referral coupon to buy a $25.99 wine vs. a $34.99 one vs. a $49.99 one?
2. Generate multiple coupons to use for a online store vs. using a pritned coupon in the same store multiple times when it says one coupon per customer?
