TN: 2012 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino

We really enjoyed this and it drank well for its young age. Picked these up for ~$35 a bottle from JJB back in 2017. Wish I’d bought a case.

  • 2012 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (1/24/2020)
Dried cherry, earthy, savory sweet. Drinking well in the zone. Paired with spaghetti and meatballs. Delicioso! (92 pts.)

I had it with a really nice pizza at Il Grifo in Montalcino mid June 2018. Yes, agreed, quite nice despite its youth. Good price too.

2012 Il Poggione BDM is also drinking well after a decant. I paid low $30s for mine.

I had an amazing fresh porcini salad at Il Grifo once…a giant plate of porcini slices, each of which had been placed very briefly on a grill (just enough to put grill marks on one side, but not enough to cook through) and then drizzled with olive oil.

That’s an amazing price…right now Costco has it for $57, which is more than I want to pay for the '12 (though would be thrilled to pick up some of the '15 at that price). At $30 (or anything under about $45) I’d definitely buy.

I love it how in Tuscany, in the right places, they can make such simple dishes taste so wonderful. I recall another small place, in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, called Trattoria Bonini, which had such simple, yet amazingly good dishes (and very inexpensive to boot), the most memorable for me were:

Beef with Fresh Mushrooms.

It being a work-related lunch (a banker-friend/schoolmate took me there to discuss certain products they were offering) and we had to attend a wedding in Barga later that afternoon, we just shared a carafe of red house wine. I don’t recall what it was; but it was more than decent with the pasta and meat courses.
