TN: 1985 Château Beychevelle (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien)

Surprisingly bold and beautiful nose—hint of menthol, tobacco, maybe a little meat (though could be the Flannery prime rib that’s underway in stove); on the mouth so lovely, utterly resolved, with a spine of sweet fruit—almost like an old Cali in the middle palate: cedar, leather—slightly bracing acidity on the finish! As good a Bordeaux as I’ve drunk in a long time.

It’s a beautiful wine. I don’t know whether it is like an old cali cab or old cali cabs used to be more bdx-like, but the similarity is unmistakable. Lovely. Glad you enjoyed it

Thank you for the note, I picked up a case of this after those beautiful bottles of ‘66 Beychevelle last year.

Thanks, Neal and Chiu,
85’s seem to be showing well generally, but even so, this is a special one!

Beychevelle made some great wines back then, thanks for sharing. I had a 1989 last year that was lovely. Cheers.

Great! More 85’s on board–maybe Mouton next.

‘85 Cheval Blanc is a killer wine ATM, as good as it gets.
