TN: 1998 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Opened on Friday as we continue to pull good bottles while in stay at home mode. Pop and pour.

Light red in color. 14% ABV. Tremendous nose of red fruits, roasted herbs, blood and garrigue. Medium body with perfect acidity. Powerful and concentrated. Clean and well balanced. Somewhat rustic with an appealing roasted quality to the fruit. Kirsch, plums, herbes de Provence and a bit of earth on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Great showing from a favorite producer in just a stellar vintage. Well stored bottles should drink nicely for at least another 2-4 years.

My rating: 96 points.

I probably haven’t had one of these since I went full AFWE, but I recall it being a remarkably lush but layered CdP. Glad to hear it is still showing suit.
