how covid-19 lead to increased wine buying

Have others had similar experiences?

Prior to our (NZ) Covid-19 lockdown on 25th March, my YTD purchases was a measly 12 bottles. Then things kind of went off the rails and I mean way off the rails. Spending too much time in front of my computer screen. So here is how it played out…

6th April: Decided I needed to support a local winery: 3 x 2017 Home Block PN and 3 x 2017 Damsteep PN from Black Estate in Nth Canterbury

7th April: Annual Raveneau allocation: 3 x 2017 Montee de Tonnerre, 1 x 2017 Mdt magnum & 1 x2017 Petit Chablis magnum

17th April: Annual Bell Hill mailing list purchase: 3 x 2016 Bell Hill PN, 2 x 2016 Bell Chardonnay & 1 x 2016 Old Weka Pass PN

17th April: after a magic bottle of 2008 Felsina CCR, decided I need more Chianti: 4 x 2016 Felsina CCR, 4 x 2016 Felsina Rancia & 4 x 2016 Fontodi CC

21st April: Decided needed to backfill even more Felsina: 4 x 2013 Felsina CCR, 2 x 2015 Felsina CC, 2 x 2015 Felsina CCR & 4 x 2015 Felsina Rancia

24th April: Bloody Hell, local wine merchant put their entire wine list on 20% off: 1 x 2007 Ch Rayas CNDP, 3 x 2006 Ch Fonsalette & 3 x 2009 Ch. Fonsalette

29th April: Annual Jamet allocation: 3 x 2017 Cote Rotie and 1 x 2017 Cote Brune

Still have one more day to go right!

A combination of really good and bad timing - collision of Covid and a comorbid wine buying habit :p. Buy until you notice you need your disposable money for something more useful like bills, etc. Some nice buys this month by the looks of it!

Having more time to read the myriad of e-mail offers does not help.

I’ve spent close to 500€ since my quarantine started, which is a lot for me. Highlights were Collares 1969, Terras de Tavares 1997, Herdade do Esporão Reserva 1991 and Herdade do Esporão Torre 2011.

Well, that would be in response to the myriad letters I’ve been getting from retailers and wineries.

Yes, it’s become very difficult to remember that I’m trying to keep my inventory down and I don’t have big wine dinners to balance buying.

Always a good excuse of course. I’ve been wanting to try the Paetra wines and they have a ridiculous offer. Winebid has been having interesting offerings. I got a good offer on 2008 Cristal.

Fortunately the inventory reduction thread convinced me not to place the Chamber St. Wines order that I was one click from buying.
