1973

Looking for a bottle of 1973 for my 50th bday. Probably an old Napa Cab or Bordeaux. Any suggestions?

1973 Heitz Marthas or Mayacamas are both great, though pricey
Rioja is a better bet if you want to keep reasonable I think.

Look elsewhere than Bordeaux.

73 Tondonia Blanco is still giving much pleasure…

I’ve never had it, but how about some Dom Perignon? It comes highly recommended…

My birth year as well. I have drank around 25 bottles from the vintage and have had much better luck with Napa than Bordeaux. I’ve enjoyed Spring Mountain Estate, Sterling, Freemark Abbey and BV. I suspect Ridge and Heitz would be good options as well. Champagne is the region that is most highly acclaimed in that year - though I have yet to taste a 73 Champagne.

Thanks Brian! Will look for a Napa Cab or Champagne

Rioja. It was a very good vintage.

1973 Chappellet by Philip Togni.

At this point, you might want to look for it in 1500ml [if such a thing exists], but back in the day, it was a masterpiece in 750ml.

1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. Won the red wine competition at Judgement of Paris in 1973.

Probably not easy to find, especially stateside, but it’s a very nice white Burgundy vintage. The 1973 Bonneau du Martray is the best wine from Bonneau du Martray I ever tasted.

Forget Bordeaux, and red Burgundy isn’t much better. But white Burgs can be still excellent … and 1973 is a fine year for Champagne.
Southern Rhone is not ba but not great either.

No specialist on US …

I opened a pristine bottle of 1973 Chateau Climens last year. It was superb and a unanimous WOTN at a dinner with 8 people in total.

This! My bro is a '73 vintage, so I’ve had my share over the years. This one last year is one of the best.

Super clean bottle, great fill. Very rioja right out of the gate. Mushroom, cigar, earth tones and a blackberry liquor scent, just lovely nose. Amazing power and concentration at 45 yrs of age. It feels like an older wine, but at the same time, youthful. Held up well over several hours. Glad to have additional bottles!

Campo Viejo or Dom Perignon. Both are drinking excellent.

Thanks!! I have found several nice Riojas on K&L wines. Right now the Vina Valoria is my top find so far. Also, looking on Wine-Searcher, but have never bought anything from them before.

We sold a lot of 73 Bordeaux back then …had the Mouton about fifteen years ago…surprisingly good…hard to imagine anything but Latour good now.

1973 Mt Eden Cab. rated mid 90’s and 50 year lifespan, IIRC.
Martha’s
Mayacamas

Last week I opened a 1973 Steinberger Beerenauslese-Eiswein, bought at Kloster Eberbach decades ago. Maybe the only 1973 German wine I’ve had. Wonderful aged stuff. Unfortunately it was only bottle.

’73 Latour was the best from Bordeaux, could still be alive…
otherwise would look for Mayacamas CS

and the 1973 Dom Ruinart BdB was extraordinarily good ten years ago – cannot have faded much
and yes – Dom Pérignon ’73 very fine
