2017 Weon Carignan, Maule Valley Chile

Medium to dark crimson color. The aromas have the peppery, briary, mineral character I associate with Carignan, with more red fruit than than black and a nice noticeable herbal streak. The palate is light in body, the flavors accentuate the briary and herbal character but with more than enough red fruit (strawberry, cherry) to broaden and soften things up. The flavors and tannins could almost say ‘Zinfandel’, but the light body and zingy texture set it apart. The finish has reasonable length and good balance. A very pleasant glass on a cool Maine evening featuring shepherd’s pie for dinner. Rated 89, lacks intensity for a higher score, but excellent value at $14.
