WineAccess Thread - Wines, Tasting Notes, Deals, etc.

#1 Post by Peter C. » August 13th, 2020, 11:35 am

Figured I'd start a thread unless there's one out there so we're not ruining the fun within the de Negoce thread. I'm also lazy and searching the wine coupon thread for interesting the WA-specific scoops was too time consuming. [cheers.gif]

Got some Off the Cuff, Stay Home (aka Antica Cabernet) and a few other goodies arriving today, will post some notes once I get to cracking them later this evening and tomorrow.

Forgot to include that Concept Album is the former Hidden Ridge vineyard, now apparently called Immortal Estate. Curious to try that one just b/c of its location.

That's a bummer. Still showing as in stock when I just checked. I wonder if availability is regional (like Wine.com) or if it's the same no matter where you are.

I love the fact that they allow me to pick the delivery date. I live in Florida, just selected delivery for late November. Best thing is that I will forget about it and it will feel like a gift when I get it :)

Thanks for posting! Here are my notes from the other night on the Off the Cuff and Cosmologist:

2018 Off the Cuff:

If someone asked me to show an example of a wine that demonstrated a good example of what "needs time" means, I'd probably pour them a glass of this. Holy mother of tightly wound tannins. That said, it has really nice nose with dark fruit, vanilla, and oak. Interesting mouthfeel, with like I said, tons and tons of tannins, but again lots of dark fruit, spice, and mulled cherries. Definitely very very high alcohol.

I do think this will be good in a year or so, but I'd be quite upset if I paid anywhere close to $285 for this wine. Looking forward to revisiting this tomorrow to see if it opens up a bit more.

2018 Cosmologist:
Floral violets, plum, and dark cherry on the nose. Very well integrated with silky tannins. Hard to believe this is 14.9% alcohol (the same as the Off the Cuff). I'm struggling a bit to name what I'm tasting, but definitely a bunch of plum and other dark fruits. Something on the finish is just... off. Very one note, reminds me of the mouthfeel of drinking water. Maybe I'm looking for a bit more acid?

The Cosmologist wasn't bad, but between the two I think I like the Off the Cuff better. I poured both right after popping the cork, so I'm looking forward to revisiting these tomorrow. These high alcohol wines are quite something... after two half glasses I'm definitely feeling it.

I will post follow ups from night 2 / 3 later tonight

Got the offer through AMEX for $50 off $150 and purchased a couple Massican Annia magnums and a bottle of Stay Home cab.

I’ve never had Massican wine, but based on the recent California whites thread I’ve been reading it sounds like this was a good choice.

Yup, and they ship in styro with an ice pack during summer months which is great. Shipment just arrived via UPS, shipped at 8pm last night out of upstate NY and when I opened the box moments ago all 6 bottles were still cool to the touch despite it being 85 today.

I've found if your shipment has 1-2 bottles they give you one ice pack, and 3 or more triggers 2 packs.

The Bedrock is sick. As is the Seghesio Old Vines for $29 before stacking.

If anyone wants a $50 off $150 referral link just DM me, as someone correctly mentioned in the Wine Coupon thread, through August 31 recent links are $30 off. I used an old $50/150 today to ship my parents some wine and the $50 off code still worked.

Well, the shipment I received two weeks ago had six bottles, but only one cool pack. Hmm... I got some Argyros Assyrtiko I haven't yet tried and Prager Hinter Der Burg Grüner Veltliner Federspiel. The Argyros is sold out, but the Prager is still available and with the AMEX offer the price comes down to what you would pay in Europe for it. I have had one bottle and it is a very good, pure GV. I missed an offer an a Prager GV Smaragd a month or two back. By the time I put it in my basket, it was sold out. Drat.

Yes, they shipped from NY to me in PA. Thankfully, the bottles were still a little cool. They could have been better. And thankfully, I ended up buying Prager Federspiels at $30 bottle (pre-discount) instead of the Smaragds I wanted at $60, so I was less freaked out. since I won't hold on to these as long.

I served the 2017 Piece of Work cab a couple weeks ago, and it was liked by all (including myself). @$23, was solid QPR. Have 5 left. Purchased back in January. Considered buying some of the Rose for $12/btl thats currently available but decided against it, since I got DN rose.

Popped the 2016 Stay Home Cab (15%) off the truck, no decant. It is most certainly Antica and is a steal for $20. No obscene oak which is what I worry most about these mystery bottles, nose sports some graphite/minerality, sage and mix of brambly fruit. Palate is where this shines, medium bodied with plenty of acid and you can discern the mountain fruit's influence. First sip or two there was a second or so of subtle heat on the finish, but again this bottle came off the truck Thursday and I just poured a glass. Chilled the bottle and will update my note in a bit.

Second glass had the benefit of some air (still in bottle though, no decant) and a slight chill. Heat as suspected vanished from the finish, really nice wine that's probably going to be much better tomorrow w a decant. Aroma is more expressive, too.

Some overdue updates. I tasted again on day two, but thought that everything was similar to day one, so decided to let the bottles sit another day or two. The notes below are from tonight, but are consistent with my thoughts from yesterday.

2018 Cosmologist:
I have to call this wine a disappointment. On the first night I was pleasantly surprised by how well integrated this wine was, and also commented that I couldn't believe there was as much alcohol as there is. Here on night four this thing is HOT. Really nice nose with dark fruit, but the palate is just overwhelmed by the alcohol, and makes it hard to taste anything.

2018 Off the Cuff
This wine really came into its own over the past few days. Chocolate, cigar box, and leather with a touch of dark fruit on the nose. The chocolate note is one of the more distinct smells I have picked up from a wine in a long time; its very prominent. When tasting, again oak related flavors dominate. Chocolate and leather, a bit of dark fruit, and a nice finish of spice and mulled cherries. The alcohol on this has really mellowed out, as have the intense tannins. I'm really looking forward to seeing what this wine will be like in a year or so. I think it has a lot of potential.

What is the code for $50 off $200. Also, I can't seem to find where to enter a promo code at checkout. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Follow this link and it will automatically apply over $200: http://wineaccess.com/newsite

If it’s your first order, you can stack with a referral: http://share.wineaccess.com/v/joe_32

Enjoy!
Joe,

Thanks for the codes. How do I “stack” the two together? Each link seems to only provide the respective discount. Apologies for the confusion on my end. I’d really like to grab some of the Teeter-Totter.

I got 12 Cosmo and 6 Off the Cuff. Did not like the Off the Cuff today but will give it time. Will try a Cosmo tomorrow and report back. But now I'm worried.

I don't think they're stackable for new users.

If they are you would have to. 1) Create account using referral link. That should put the $30 off $100 on your account. Add a few things to your cart. 2) Then Visit the other link while logged in which should put that code in your account.

The newsite link is stackable with Amex Offers + any other referral credits you have.

Maybe it's better to just take the $80 off $180 ... [Referral + Amex Offer]

Everyone's palate is different, you may wind up loving the Cosmo. That said, you're in for 30+ cases of "no-name" wine, there are bound to be a few you don't like. Off the Cuff improved significantly with time - hopefully you didn't finish that bottle. If not, give it a try on Sunday and post what you think.

Just ordered two of the Teeter-Totter, four of the Stay at Home cab, and a few other goodies. By the way, here is my referral link if anyone hasn't joined yet. I believe it entitles you to $30 off your first order.

I had the Cosmologist over two nights and found it pleasant, a fair value. The alcohol level did not strike me as an issue. Good fruit, some complexity, nice mouthfeel. My problem--and I find this to be an issue with many of these Cabernet mystery wines--is that it did not remind me of Cabernet. A nice red blend, that's it. (By the way, Matthew T, in contrast, the de Négoce OG #2 does taste like Cabernet to me.)

I'm going to drink it today. That's an interesting observation and it's kind of how I felt with the Off The Cuff. I haven't had this issue in the past with CHAD though it has been years since I bought that from WA.

If you haven't finished it, I'd be curious what you think about the alcohol level in the Cosmologist two nights from now.

Great comment about this not reminding me of Cab, I think that is what I was struggling to put my finger on with this wine, about it being "off."

All gone Mike. It's the rare wine that makes it four days around here.

I have a delta card and a Marriott bonvoy Amex and the wine access offer only came up on my Marriott card, not the sky miles. I’ve noticed that both cards have some offers that are the same and some offers are not.

I really enjoyed the Cosmologist yesterday. I found it far superior to the Off The Cuff.

Amex offer good until 9/30, but it is not available on the Delta card. I accessed it through Amex Hilton Honors.
