2020 VDP Nahe & Rheinhessen Ring Auction Thread

Good morning all,

Time for round 2 of the auctions. I do not bid every year at the Nahe, so will refrain from the trend commentary I had in the Mosel thread. For ease, I have copied over the PDF file to Word to work from. 0,75 = 750mL, 1,5 = 1.5L and so on.

Here are the first results. I will post again every few lots with additional results. There are 35 lots up for auction today. Anyone who is a regular or also attending, please do chime in with any broader thoughts or observations.

I went to the Nahe auction in 2003. Things were not so crazy back then. It was possible to get a wine at what felt like a price where it was still within reason.

I just finished the Word document with all the lots, so I am going to dig up 2019 pricing to compare. Seeing some high results so far. Mosel seems to get more attention generally, but having been a Nahe bidder sporadically back to the early 2000s it seems for certain estates this is where the biggest price jumps have taken place.

The Howard Ripley spreadsheet has 2019 results and their projections

Marvelous! Thank you. About a year ago all the 20ish years of history disappeared from the VDP sites. I was having trouble finding Nahe for 2019 since I do not save the results every year.

A few more results in a moment…

With thanks to Erich, I now have 2019 results to compare- and so far, things are looking up. Finger in the wind- 10% over last year on average. Following are results to where bidding is for the moment, with last year’s results for the 2018 vintage sold in 2019 added in parentheses.

Thanks for doing this Tom! I’m watching but don’t have my computer on hand right now.

Emrich-Schonleber up now. This will be interesting.

I am nervous seeing earlier results. These are the ones I bid heavy on this year. Hoping I bid high enough. Results so far suggest these will do quite well.

Curious, anyone know what wine glasses they’re using at these auctions? When I was in Germany I only ever saw these or the Zalto Universal in tasting rooms.

The next four lots- with 2019 pricing in parentheses where a comparative was available. A fine showing for Prinz Salm and Emrich Schonleber.

Donhoff is up next.

Donhoff brings us to the halfway point with the strongest results yet. Lengthy bidding process as well- these were and remain some of the most in-demand wines of all the auctions.

Really happy to win some Auf Der Ley. The 2013 was the wine of the night at the Rieslingstudy dinner on Friday.

And another strong showing with Groebe. Everything is up this year- and there seems to be an even greater interest than usual in the larger formats.

I bid for one bottle on this auction. I can’t get excited about most!

I hope you won / win it!

Buckle up! Keller is next.

I only bid on the Dönnhoff GG and the Keller sylvaner. I didn’t expect to get either.

More good news from a trio of fine producers,

Fasten your safety belts- Keller up next…

400e for the sylvaner. I think. I wish (like in the mosel auction ) the on screen graphic included the name of the wine.
