#GlassFire

#1 Post by Karen Troisi » September 27th, 2020, 5:36 am

Woke up to Nixle alerts about a new fire they named the #GlassFire. This one started in the middle of the night. Please pray for all those in its path and our winery friends - this is a fast moving fire in the northern valley. The fire has jumped the trail near Deer Park Road. (I did not take this photo - it is from a Napa Valley private group site on Facebook - the photo was taken traveling south on the Silverado Trail toward Crystal Springs Rd)

5:52 am Update - evacuations now mandatory for Silverado Trail area from Larkmead Lane to Deer Park Road.

6:23 am update - Angwin now under mandatory evacuation. CalFire brought in air support and bulldozers that seem to be helping some. Fire still spreading but not as rapidly. No reports on acreage or any structure damage.

This is nuts. Mandatory evacuations in process. This is right at Mending Wall for those wondering.

A resident of Crystal Springs Road St Helena just reported that the fire is moving up the hilly terrain there very quickly and she believes (without any actual knowledge) that structures are likely affected. No word yet on how this started.

We can smell the smoke here in Sonoma County. Hoping Cal-Fire can get this under control quickly.

Just spoke with Mike Smith, he’s across Valley from the fire. Said he woke up to the smell of smoke but if he looks up he sees stars in the sky. Says it’s windy as fu¢k.

ABC News is reporting that the fire is up to 50 acres. Stay safe up there. There is a wind advisory through tomorrow morning, which will not help fighting this fire.

Evacuation warning just extended south to Taplin Road (for those unfamiliar - Joseph Phelps winery is on Taplin). This is a warning not a mandatory evacuation order.

Has anyone heard from Merrill? I saw earlier Pickett Road area was either in or close to the mandatory evacuation zone.

Yes, Merrill is either just outside or just inside the northwest edge of the mandatory evacuation zone (sources disagree whether it ends at Pickett road or extends a little bit farther). That zone boundary has been pretty stable, which suggests fire has not been moving in that direction.

This is bad. As of right now...

Fire is 2400 acres and no containment
It jumped Silverado Trail briefly near Ehlers Lane and went past the Napa River, but they got it out
Burned in and around Merus, Neal, Tuck Beckstoffer, Mending Wall, Failla, Jones Family, Reverie, Viader, Burgess, Zaikin, Dana "Lotus" (I was at MW and it made it but unsure of others although I hear firefighters were good at saving wineries)
All aircraft are "off" the fire for the night, with high winds expected soon
Mandatory evacuation is everything east of Silverado Trail, with the boundary being all of Howell Mtn, Pickett Rd to the north and Meadowood to the south.

Yes, Merrill is either just outside or just inside the northwest edge of the mandatory evacuation zone (sources disagree whether it ends at Pickett road or extends a little bit farther). That zone boundary has been pretty stable, which suggests fire has not been moving in that direction.

Yes, they like to draw a line right there at Silverado Trail and Pickett.
From what I've seen, they tend to be generous(?) about including the less densely populated unincorporated areas compared to areas inside the city or town limits.

Failla Update..

#49 Post by TomHill » September 27th, 2020, 7:45 pm

Ehren just did a Facebook post. The fire flared up & jumped CrystalSprings Rd and burned over the ridge & thru his vnyd but the firefighters stopped it at the driveway and none of the bldgs ignited. Good thing vnyds don't burn very fiercely. It hits close to home when it's one of your friends being threatened. Scary times, indeed. If only those Calif folks would learn to rake the floors of their forests like they'd been told to!!

Oh Tom did my rakin' and didn't need anyone telling me to do so. Prayers for my fellow Californians.
