I think the 17s are drinking well, but if I was gonna go for any of those it’d be the ech. About a 6-800 premium from best retail which isn’t bad until ++ makes it another 500.
That was my thought. I have found I prefer the Ech to the GE over the last 10 years.
I’m not any sort of expert on these things, but I think some restaurants like to have some ultra-trophy wines like this on their list, to enhance the prestige of their restaurant and wine program.
And as such, they aren’t really priced with as much intention of selling them and thus taking them off the list, or at least not with the intention of selling them until someone rolls in who doesn’t care about the pricing and is willing to just pay whatever.
Obviously, the motive and pricing strategy would vary greatly from one restaurant to another, and I’m just suggesting one possible answer to the question you posed.
I ran into this very explicitly in Boston at a newly opened Del Frisco’s a couple years back. They had a large DRC selection priced terribly even relative to Del Frisco’s in Manhattan. They told me they intentionally over priced them to help with an award they were trying to get. Don’t ask me how that works
Remember when RC 2002 was $2400 at Lulu SF when the wholesale price was $1200/btl? I do!
I guess this means the Wine Spectator awards. If they keep more selections on their list, it’s a more impressive collection and more likely to win an award. If they price them to sell, them the list will be less impressive.
With respect to places listing the 17s now, unless they’re willing to age them to maturity and then list them, it might actually be best to list the youngest available, before they shut down.
It’s probably also about anchoring. Having a set of 4-figure bottles in the burg section makes it easier and more likely for a punter to go “$350 for the Leroy Bourgogne Rouge isn’t so bad”.
For sure! I remember ordering a DRC RSV 06 for $600 at a steak house in Grand Rapids.

Echezeaux is pretty prevalent under €800–/bottle.
The Wholesale price of 2005 was $650/btl and am sure the 2006 was in same ballpark. This would mean the restaurant was selling at or below cost. Incredible.
Those prices aren’t too bad, less than 2x retail.
Lots of different locations and there are threads about that. It’s all based on relationship. Unfortunately many retailers gouge their customers for the “privilege” of receiving an allocation from them. The 2x I quoted was good retail. High retail is another story.
