TN: 2018 Trail Marker Wine Co. Zweigelt Mokelumne Glen

  • 2018 Trail Marker Wine Co. Zweigelt Mokelumne Glen - USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi Mokelumne River (11/9/2020)
Very primary red fruits and a summer freshness to it, but not at the cost of character. Great acidity as you would expect at that lower level of ripeness (low alcohol at 11.5% ABV). This grape tends to make pretty deep colored wines, but here it’s in a much lighter shade, again revealing that it was probably picked early. Mokelumne Glen vineyard in Lodi, run by the Koth family, specializes in German and Austrian odd varieties and is one of the few vineyards in the US that grows this rare Austrian type. For those that have not had it, I would describe it as something in the northern Italian vein, like perhaps a Piedmontese variety or something. I loved this and could find tons of great occasions for it. It fits a lot of food. I don’t know anything about winemaker or company, but if you come across it, try it. (90 pts.)
