Going beyond Region, SubRegion, Appellation

As I’ve gotten more & more into Barolo & started thinking about other important regions like Champagne or Rioja and how going beyond region, subregion, & appellation are a part of better understanding the wines. In Barolo there’s Verduno, Roddi, Grinzane Cavour, Diano D’Alba, Serralunga D’Alba, Castiglione Falletto, Monforte D’Alba, Novello, Barolo, La Morra, & Cherasco. Here in the US we have the AVA system, so the Willamette Valley has Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, McMinnville, Ribbon Ridge, Yamhill-Carlton, & in early 2019 The Van Duzer Corridor was added and this summer Tualatin Hills and the Laurelwood District were both added as well.

What are some of the key areas or ways to better understand a region you’re passionate about?
