Bottom Feeder Wines of the Major European Regions

Same idea as The Legendary QPR Wine from each Major European Region - WINE TALK - WineBerserkers but this time we’re plumbing the depths, slumming it, etc.

What is the cheapest, widely available wine from a major region that you’d happily drink without feeling you were drinking something vastly inferior to what you most like drinking in this region. Traditional leaning styles preferred.

I’ll start. Prices to the nearest 5 bux.

The winner of each catagory is the cheapest wine that more than half the respondents deem acceptable.

Otto does not have the right to overrule this poll. [rofl.gif]

Would you be happy to drink all of these or can you offer a better choice without upping the price?

This list is far from exhaustive and totally subjective. No need to argue. Just give suggestions for regions you like.

Loire Chenin - Badenhorst Secateurs @ $15
Langhe Nebbiolo - Produttori @ $20
Rioja - LdH @ $22
Dry Riesling - Donnhoff Estate @ $14

The Jadot Beaujolais-Villages is by no means a great wine but is adequate for a brainless drink-it-and-don’t-think-it. I think it’s $11-12 USD.

Off the top of the head, I’m thinking Joguet Petites Roches can be found around $20. Also Kuentz-Bas Riesling (maybe $15).

Agree

Finally a thread in my wheelhouse

Campo Viejo Reserve Rioja

Dr Loosen Dry

Agree on Louis Jadot Beaujolais

Had an Albert Bichot from Saint Veran via Wine Access recently that was solid

You buried the lede (Burgundy!). :grinning:

Not sure about US pricing but a couple of quick preliminary suggestions
Fino - Tio Pepe, and many others, eg La Guita, San Patricio
White Burgundy - Jadot BB, Roche de Bellene BB , La Chablisienne
Red Burgundy - aged Cru Beaujolais (ok a stretch),
Off dry Riesling. Dr L

Loire Muscadet - Clos Briords for <20$
Etna Rosso - Tenuta delle Terre Nere 18$
Etna Bianco - Tenuta delle Terre Nere 20$
Rioja - LdH as well for <25$
Champagne if you want to go lower than 25$, perhaps the Kirkland Champagne? at 20$
Soave - PIEROPAN SOAVE CLASSICO <20$

Instead of Langhe for Nebbiolo, I’d propose Alto Piedmont and Produttori di Carema or Vallana Spanna for around $15-20 max.

I was going to suggest Jadot Beaune 1er crus for red Burgundy, that’s how I got my start, but then I looked up the current Winesearcher prices LOL. That’s no longer bottom-feeding unless you are willing to make a serious Burgundy adjustment.

White Burgundy - Anything from Chablis. Basic Chablis I would pick Fevre as my favourite. Domaine des Malandes, Moreau-Naudet and Lavantureux have some affordable 1ers.

Germany - Hild Elbing $13-15

Great choices, but as some of those are included in the Legendary Value thread (see OP) these are great wines, but this thread is about really cheaping out. Whatever was in the previous thread we need to slash thelat price.

What wines would you drink when you really wanted a cheap night in?

Where in the Loire is this made? [rofl.gif]

LdH … Heredia or Haro? Latter meets the price brief not sure the former does!

In Rioja I’d rather have Marques de Caceres or CVNE crianza’s over AFWE fave Lopez de Heredia. They’re half the price and much more widely available.

[*]

No I copy pasted and didn’t edit ha!

They sound like good choices. Which CVNE crianza? The ‘Cune’?
