Had this with the thickest swordfish steak of my life!
1990 Mount Eden Estate Chardonnay
Deep golden color.
Mature, complex nose of lemon, coconut and caramel.
Elegant, delicate lemon/lime fruit entry with a touch of marshmallow.
Great acid/fruit balance in the long red grapefruit finish.
This 30 year old CA Chard is still kickin’ ass and actually improved as the evening wore on.
Certainly, there’s only a hand full of CA Chards that could hold up this well. A remarkable example…
Mount Eden Vineyards is one of my favorite domestic wineries. I have never had a twenty year old domestic chard. I would be curious as to how much oxidation it experienced and if the color was dark golden brown as so often happens to old whites.
There was only a touch of oxidation evidenced by the slightly caramel nose and touch of marshmallow in the taste.
It was remarkably fresh for it’s age!
It was a light golden sorta like a slightly aged Sauternes.
