TN: Recent burgundies

  • 2017 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault (4/4/2021)
Expressive nose displaying succulent concentrated yellow fruit with a hint of white, lemon curd, apple, pear, sweet spices, honey, honeysuckle and limestone. Excellent concentration, packed concerted ripe yellow fruit, lemon oil, rich and opulent yet also energetic and precise, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral and a long ripe concentrated yellow fruit driven finish with honeysuckle and cinnamon at the end. This has the concentrated ripe fruit expression of a GC Montrachet but obviously lack finesse and complexity. Very Lafon and really delicious. (93 pts.)
  • 2018 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru (3/19/2021)
Expressive nose displaying very ripe yellow fruit, peach, lemon curd, apple, honey, light caramel, sweet and spicy spices and strong mineral. Excellent concentration, packed ripe yellow fruit, rich and sweet, bright acidity, strong mineral and a medium to long ripe yellow fruit driven finish with a hint of honey at the end. This clearly expresses the very ripe vintage character but bright acidity and mineral help to maintain a reasonable balance. Based on my experiences with the 12 vintage, perhaps it need another five years to settle down. (92 pts.)
  • 2010 Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru (3/13/2021)
Expressive youthful nose displaying perfectly ripe red and black fruit, raspberry, blackberry, blackberry jelly, a slightly hint of sous bois starting to emerge, rose, sweet spices and limestone mineral. Excellent concentration, very finely layered generous black and red fruit, silky and weightless, perfect amount of acidity, strong mineral, and a long perfectly ripe black fruit driven finish with a hint of rose at the end. For me, the texture is what separates the great Grand crus and this is a very good example. There is no harsh tannins of the pre 2006 Faiveley wines. This will develop beautifully for the next two decades. This represents a great buy at auction. (95 pts.)
  • 2018 David Duband Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbé - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru (3/6/2021)
Sweet nose displaying ripe black fruit, blackberry jam, blackberry liqueur, a hint of raspberry, dark spices, cedar, tree bark and earth. Good concentration, nicely layered ripe black fruit, silky and fluid which can be attributed to high alcohol, medium acidity, earthy mineral, fine tannins and a medium long ripe black fruit driven finish. It clearly expresses the ripe 18 vintage character. (92 pts.)
  • 2018 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru (2/21/2021)
Medium expressive nose displaying ripe warm fruit, yellow peach, white peach, golden delicious, sweet spices and a hint of limestone. Very good concentrated, packed ripe yellow fruit, bright acidity, medium mineral and a medium long ripe yellow fruit driven finish with nutmeg at the end. It expresses the warm 18 vintage. I recommend a couple hours of decanting. (90 pts.)
