TN: Ravenswood Zin Barrica '99/Bedrock Syrah OldLkview '07..(short/boring)

Greg O’Byrne hosted a Bedrock/Once&Future Zoom tasting with Joel & Morgan ystrday at CHOMP, the new SantaFe Food Hall. After those wines, we tried:

  1. Ravenswood Zin BarriciaVnyd 1999: Med.dark bit murky color some bricking; lots of cedary/pencilly/oldZin light blackberry/Zin/spicy fairly dusty/OldVine slight earthy fairly complex nose; lightly tart slightly tired rather cedary/pencilly/oldZin bit blackberry/spicy/Zin light toasty/oak fairly complex flavor w/ light drying tannins; very long fairly cedary/pencilly/old Zin bit tired/drying some blackberry/spicy/peppery/Zin fairly complex finish w/ light drying tannins; clearly showing its age but still some Zin fruit remaining and in much better shape than any 22 yr old Zin should be; still offers up pleasure but getting to fade away into the sunset.

  1. Bedrock Syrah OldLakeviewRd SonomaCoast (15.5%; 4 brls + 1 puncheon) 2007: Very dark/black color w/ little bricking; strong toasty/Fr.oak very strong cracked black pepper/black olive tapenade strong blackberry/spicy/Syrah/boysenberry beautiful complex nose; lightly tart intense Rhonish/black olive tapenade/very cold-climate Syrah/black pepper strong blackberry/Syrah/boysenberry/ripe some toasty/oak quite complex flavor w/ modest ripe tannins; very long/lingering very strong c-c/black pepper/blaco olive tapenade strong blackberry/spicy/Syrah/peppery rather complex/Rhonish finish w/ light gentle tannins; showing no signs of its age and should go another 4-6 yrs at least; my favorite of all the Bedrocks tonight; beautiful c-c Syrah.

A wee BloodyPulpit:

  1. Syrah: This Syrah comes from the OldLakeviewVnyd on the old Lakeview Rd from Sonoma over to Petaluma. Certifiable cold-climate territory. It resembles any of the best Carneros Syrahs, though it comes from the Petaluma Gap area, now an AVA.
Bedrock doesn’t get the recognition I think they deserve for their Syrahs and this was one of their best I’ve had.

Great notes as always Tom - i especially love hearing about the 07 Lakeview. I actually have not tried any of Morgan’s syrah from 07, but the Bedrock and Lorenzo have been great within the last couple years. Not bad for your first at bat! [cheers.gif]
