TN: Three Older Peays & Two Ojais...(short/boring)

Had these from the archives several weeks ago:

  1. Peay Chard Estate/SonomaCoast (13.9%) Cloverdale 2007: Deep gold color; rather melony/celery seed/slight herbal fairly pencilly/toasty/Fr.oak slight vanilla/caramel/butterscotch mature Chard complex nose; fairly tart stong melony/herbal/nutmeg/spicy/mature Chard some toasty/Fr.oak/caramel/butterscotch/honeyed some spicy/nutmeg rather complex mature Chard flavor; v ery long fairly tart mature Chard/honeyed/bit herbal/spicy/nutmeg fairly toasty/Fr.oak/pencilly/vanilla complex finish w/ a trace of oxidative character; a really lovely example of a fully mature Calif Chard that’s not showing a lot of signs of its age; drink up before it does.

  1. Peay PinotNoir Estate/ScallopShelf/SonomaCoast (14.2%) 2007: Med.dark some bricking color; some cherry/black cherry/PN fairly fragrant complex fully mature PN nose; rather tart some toasty/Fr.oak light black cherry/PN/cherry slight Burgundian/earthy bit cedary/pencilly complex mature PN flavor w/ light gentle tannins; very long lightly tart smooth/mature PN some cedary/pencilly/toasty/Fr.oak slight Burgundian finish w/ light smooth tannins; a lovely fully-mature PN that’s not going to get any better; drink up.

  1. Peay Syrah Estate/LaBruma/SonomaCoast (13.7%) 2007: Very dark color w/ slight bricking; beautiful black pepper/c-c Syrah bit floral/violets/blackberry/Syrah strong toasty/pencilly/Fr.oak fairly smokey/Rhonish/bit roasted quite complex nose; lightly tart/tangy strong c-c/Syrah/peppery some blackberry/spicy/Syrah some Rhonish/smokey/roasted/smoked meats light cedary/pencilly/toasty/Fr.oak fairly complex flavor w/ light smooth tannins; very long/lingering Rhonish/smokey/smoked meats some c-c/peppery some blackberry/Syrah/peppery complex finish w/ light smooth tannins; a lovely fully-mature Rhonish c-c Syrah that’s not going to get any better; tannins fully resolved and ready to drink.

  1. OjaiVnyd Vin du Soleil (14.5%; Grenache-based blend) 2000: Med.light bit browning color; rather cedary/pencilly/oldRed slight Grenache/strawberry rather tired nose; soft bit astringent/bitter/rather dried out some cedary/pencilly/oldRed bit old CdP flavor w/ light bit astringent tannins; a pretty tired/dried old lady.

  1. OjaiVnyd Syrah StolpmanVnyd/SBC (14.5%) 2001: Med.dark color w/ some bricking; fairly cedary/pencilly/oldRed light blackberry/Syrah/bit peppery bit smokey/toasty/oak fairly complex nose; lightly tart some cedary/pencilly/oldRed light blackberry/spicy/Syrah/bit peppery rather smooth/velvety some complex/mature flavor w/ light smooth bit astringent tannins; very long rather pencilly/cedary/oldRed some blackberry/Syrah/spicy/peppery slightly tired/dried out some blackberry/Syrah/peppery/spicy bit tired finish w/ light tannins; still has a bit of life in it & speaks of mature Syrah and heading round the bend.

  1. The Peays were pretty much where I expected them to be. All three great examples of fully-mature cold-climate wines.

Lovely wines those Peay, glad to hear they are showing well. I have some of the Ojai Presidio Vyr from '08; maybe time to start pulling corks?
