TN: 2017 Biggio Hamina Cellars Pinot Noir Lia's Vineyard

  • 2017 Biggio Hamina Cellars Pinot Noir Lia’s Vineyard - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Chehalem Mountains (5/6/2021)
Pale garnet in colour. Initially the fruit was shy, being dominated by the wine’s spicy, herbal and floral backbone. Coriander seeds, galangal, black cardamom, malabathrum. With air the floral and fruit notes grew on the nose. Raspberries, mulberries, clove, cassia, hibiscus, rose and lilacs. Medium acid. Predominantly driven by its savoury tones. A really delicate and nuanced wine that continued to grow with time. Can be drunk now, but I suspect those with patience will be handsomely rewarded in 5+ years

ABV: 13%
Closure: natural cork
Decant: 2h
Stem: Grassl Cru

I had to look up malabathrum… thanks.

100% whole cluster at work. Glad you liked it!

It’s otherwise known as Indian bay leaf or tej patta, although it’s probably closer to cinnamon bark than bay leafs as most people know it. It’s one of the key spices if you’re making Garam Masala. If you’re looking at an Indian recipe and it calls for bay leaf, it’s almost certainly this kind.

It was a fun wine. One of those where you find yourself constantly burying your nose in the glass trying to pick out the different elements that are seemingly on the tip of your tongue, and yet seemingly elude you.

Also, this was out of an Allary 500l puncheon that was new in 2011, all clone 115. Nineteen months in wood.

Dang sounds really good!
