TN: 2009 Copain Syrah James Berry Vineyard (USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles)

14.1% abv. Dark ruby color extends to the edge of the glass. Very aromatic. Boysenberry, cassis, a bit of smoke, a little meat, black olive, pepper and floral overtones. Excellent depth, concentration and length. Grippy and savory but not at all heavy. This wine actually seems to be in a pretty good place. No urgency to drink, very enjoyable! (93 pts.)

Wells always did a great job with the fruit from James Berry - this and his roussanne were always wonderful examples of what can be done with that fruit in a style that was ‘different’ but equally enjoyable as what Justin does . . .

Thanks for sharing!

Equally impressive on day two. I remember that Wells was transitioning Syrah vineyards to cooler sites in Anderson Valley because he was concerned about aging potential. This one aged beautifully!
