TNs: 13 Knoll GV Smaragd Ried Schutt, 96 Cos, 05 DDO Laurene

  • 2013 Weingut Knoll Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Schütt - Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau (7/11/2021)
Chilled and opened to accompany grilled lemon chicken and asparagus. Medium gold color. Fresh, lifted nose of alpine flowers, petrol, white peach, and pebble. Layers of lemony white grapefruit, spicy diesel, resin, and stone on the incisive palate. Vibrant, almost spritzy acidity. Tensile, steely structure. Long finish of grippy white fruit cut with rinsed rock. Excellent. (92 pts.)
  • 1996 Château Cos d’Estournel - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (7/10/2021)
Decanted 2.5 hours and followed for several more. Paired with Spencer steaks and mushrooms. Opaque ruby garnet. Nose of soulful green, currant, cassis, cedar, raw flowers. Layers of dark currant, graphite, nuanced tobacco, green pepper, and fine soil on the velvet-textured palate. Spiny acidity and smoothed, feathered tannin. Long finish of echoing red fruit, green, and sweet earth. Lovely wine. (93 pts.)
  • 2005 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir Laurène - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills (7/9/2021)
Hah, did not wait 3-5 years as recommended by my own TN of 3/28/20. Opened to accompany baked chicken. Dark but translucent ruby. Heady nose of musty cherry, full-blown violets, damp cellar, hints of currant. Layers of iron-laden pulpy raspberry, ripe red plum, earth, velvety meaty tones, and a suggestion of smoke on the palate. Bright acidity and firm tannin. Longer finish of potent red berry fruit, earth, iron, and cinnamon. A hedonistic DDO. Loved it. (92 pts.)
