TN: Two USofA Nebbiolos...(short/boring)

Had these two the other night:

  1. Gabriele Rausse Nebbiolo VA (12.4%) Charlottesvile/VA 2017: Med.light bit orange color w/ slight bricking; rather earthy/dusty/loamy slight pungent/tarry light floral/Nebb/violets/rose petal somewhat rustic/coarse not very perfumed nose; very lightly tart fairly earthy/loamy/dusty very light floral/Nebb/rose petal/lilacs bit metallic/tangy slight pungent flavor w/ light bitey tannins; short rather earthy/loamy/compost pile very slight floral/Nebb/lilacs slight pungent/metallic/tangy finish w/ light bitey tannins; a rather rough/coarse not very thrilling expression of Nebb; speaks of Nebb w/ a whisper. $nc (vSC)

  1. Idlewild Nebbiolo LostHillsRanch/MendoCnty (13.1%) 2018: Med.light color; very fragrant/perfumed/high-toned classic Nebb/floral/lilacs/rose petal light tarry/pungent/earthy bit Mendo/tomatoey quite attractive nose; quite tart/tangy/bit metallic strong floral/Nebb/rose petal/lilacs fairly rich bit tarry/earthy/Mendo tomatoey bit complex flavor w/ modest brisk/bitey tannins; very long fairly tart/tangy rather floral/Nebb/lilacs/violets light earthy/tarry bit Mendo/tomatoey finish w/ modest bitey tannins; a quite attractive Nebb that can use another 2-6 yrs; a bit like a Valtelline Nebb but a bit richer/lusher. $50.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:

  1. Gabriele Rausse: My first experience w/ this winery. He (Gabriele Rausse) is known as the “father of VA wines”, but haven’t been able to find any information on him nor why he is the “father”. Within a mile of their wnry is the Trump Wnry, where they make some of the greatest wines in America, so we’ve been told…as we’ve been told a lot of other alternative facts.

  1. Idlewild: This is the first Nebb of Sam’s from his LostHillsRanch. His Nebbs always show well at our NEB get-togethers. I don’t think this LostHills is quite up to (yet) the ones he’s made from FoxHill. A bit pricey vis a vis Langhe or AltoPiemonte Nebbs.
