Bedrock EvangelhoVnyd Heritage CCCnty (14.5%; Zin + Carignan/Mataro) 2018: Very dark color; very strong plummy/CC mushroomy/earthy ripe boysenberry/Zin/blackberry rather dusty/OV big fruit lovely ripe nose; bit soft strong blackberry/earthy CC Zin/ripe strong CC/earthy/mushroomy bit toasty/oak slight loamy/rustic flavor w/ light ripe tannins; very long strong blackberry/CC Zin/mushroomy bit earthy/loamy fairly rich/lush finish w/ modest ripe tannins; pretty classic CCCnty Zin w/ lots of mushroomy/earthy character; delicious drinking. $30.00

Bedrock PatoVnyd Heritage ContraCostaCnty RW (14.5%; own rooted plntd in 1906; Farmed: Manuel Carranza w/ Bedrock) 2019: Very dark color; much the same CCCnty more perfumed/high-toned slight herbal brighter more Zin nose; lightly tart fairly bright Zin/blackberry/spicy/bit high-toned light pencilly/oak less CCCnty/mushroomy flavor w/ modest ripe tannins; very long/lingering light CCCnty/mushroomy more bright/spicy/Zin//high toned finish w/ modest tannins; not as strongly CCCnty/mushroomy & more spicy/bright/Zin in character; very good drinking. $34.00

    : Med.dark color; strong plummy/Mourv/CCCnty earthy/mushroomy bit licorice/pungent strong toasty/oak strong dusty/OV somewhat complex nose; bit soft rich/lush strong plummy/Mourv/ripe/blackberry some CCCnty/earthy/mushroomy/bit loamy strong toasty/oak strong dusty/OV bit complex flavor w/ modest ripe tannins; very long/lingering very strong ripe/plummy/Mourv strong toasty/oak some CCCnty/earthy/mushroomy strong toasty/oak fairly dusty/OV somewhat structured fairly complex finish w/ modest ripe/chewey tannins; speaks some of CCCnty/mushroomy character & lots of plummy/Mourv fruit; can use a few yrs of age; bit pricey at $75.00

  1. Bedrock Areio e Vento e Amor EvangelhoVnyd/CCCnty (50% Mataro + 35% Zin/Carignan/Palomino/AlicanteBouschet; 25% w-c; 14.0%) 2018: Very much the same wine as the '19; a bit softer/lusher/riper on the palate & not much more evolved; still pricey at $65.00

  1. All 5 of these wines spoke strongly of CCCnty Mataro. Not enough difference to argue over. All quite good CCCnty Mourv. The Areio wines supposedly come from a distinct block of Evangelho that has the oldest vines. It translates in Portugese to “sand & wind & love” in a tribute to Frank Evangelho. I didn’t find the wines distinctly superior to the regular Evangelho Heritage to be worth the tarrif.
