A Big Night

Had some very naughty people around on Friday night. It was late. I was tired on Saturday. We drank well.

2012 Dom Pérignon Champagne: Accessible and generous of fruit. The dosage feels high or perhaps its fruit sweetness? It has the usual Dom toastiness and it has creamy richness. bead is fine, flavour intensity good and length excellent.

N.V. Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Les Carelles : January '21 disgorgement. Some toastiness and savoury earthiness to the aroma. It has intense peach fruit along with preserved lemon notes. It is full and rich, with great chalky build. It expands through the palate and is so long, vinous and chewy.

2007 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Père : This Savagnin is quite bretty. There are some good elements though, with notes of Comte cheese, green apple, chalk and lemon. It has a floral thing that reminds me of lantana in the Summer heat and it has great chalky build in the mouth. The finish is tannic, salty and chewy.

2013 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos : Still a fresh and clear appearance. Fruits are just starting to go a little exotic. It has some spice and plenty of smoky mineral. It is rich and detailed, with good tension and a ling saline finish. In a good place.

2017 Jean-Claude Ramonet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Canet : A reticent nose of citrus blossom and white peach. The palate is elegance personified with sneaky power. It is silky and voluminous, perfectly proportioned and finishes with great energy. Spice laden orchard fruit flavours linger.

2009 Bernard Boisson-Vadot Meursault Les Chevalières : A rich and heady wine, with loads of almond butter and sappy orchard fruits. It has good power and a chalky base. There’s a creamy feel against the gums and excellent acidity for the year. A beautiful wine.

2016 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes : Still very youthful but staring to drink well. Exquisite white peach fruit with a suggestion of spearmint. It has great shape and a core of intense fruit. It is a wine of power and grace and has the usual PYCM dry extract carrying the finish.

2020 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc : Opens up with the strong scent of chamomile. There are exotic fruits a plenty. It is bold, rich, heady and textural. A real mouthful of flavour and strong presence. The long finish has some smoky mineral notes.

2019 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers : Plush raspberry and cherry fruits. There’s some smoked meats and gingerbread too. It is velvety and layered, with good fruit intensity and some wood spice. Excellent depth and balance.

2015 Thierry Allemand Cornas Reynard: Very deep and dense with black fruit notes and some menthol. It has power with precision, with some light florals but has essentially shut down. Come back in 5 to 10 years.

2014 Luigi Baudana Barolo Cerretta : There’s some tar and tart berries. It has plenty of earth and some menthol too. It is elegant and expressive, with some herb and flora perfume. It gives plenty now and is a very tasty '14.

2017 Domaine Giraud Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée les Grenaches de Pierre : Don’t reckon I’ve ever had a wine more licoricey than this. In a good way mind you. There are intense red and black fruits too and a palate that is velvety of texture. It has some garrigue and is nicely balanced with a fresh finish.

Loved the movie! If your Friday night was anything like the movie, should have been fun!

Hi Warren, nothing like the movie. A bit more like Animal House.

Looks like a great night.
