Windy Oaks Picnic on the Ridge

A gorgeous day in the Santa Cruz Mountains on Sunday. Enjoyed a fabulous meal prepared by Charlie Parker, Executive Chef of the Cellar Door in Santa Cruz, featuring Tomales Bay Clams and grilled Don Watson Lamb. Windy Oaks wines included:

2008 “Once Acre” Chardonnay (subtle, stony and austere, I took home three more)
2007 “100% Wild Yeast Pinot Noir (a spicy favorite of mine)
2008 Cuvee Pinot Noir (this is just being released – Jim is quite proud of this, it is excellent)
2007 Diane’s Block (herbal and complex)

It is always a treat for me to see Jim and Judy and taste their outstanding wines. This is one of my favorite properties.

Wow, mega new releases! I’m looking forward to trying ‘wild yeast’

Really wish I could have made this one. Had the pleasure of visiting WO a couple weeks ago, however, and there is no more lovely vineyard property and no nicer folks than you’ll find there. One of the few Cali wineries I am still trying to wrap my brain around, so complex and beguiling their wines are.

Thanks for the report, Mike.

Charlie has really hit his stride at The Cellar Door since his apprenticeship at Manresa. In my experience, he is quite customer-centric, as long as you don’t yell out “Less sauce, more meat!” [stirthepothal.gif]
