Rhys Spring 2011 Offer is LIVE

#1 Post by Jim Karegeannes » January 25th, 2011, 6:12 am

Hopefully I'm jumping the gun, but I checked my account early this AM and saw that the spring release was coming on Jan 25th (knew that). Just checked back in (9 AM) and got "Spring 2011 release is now sold out"

Did I miss something? Maybe this is a non-confrontational way to tell me I'm not being offered anything this go round?

Yeah it sold out pretty quick, as expected. I got my full allocation in though...

Also keep in mind that Rhys is not on a first-come, first-served basis. They have an open window for you to come claim your allocation, after which wish listers and maybe waiters (I can't recall) get allocated what wasn't claimed. It takes the stress out of having to be there the moment the allocation is released and also means that they can send the mail when they are ready and not cause issues for folks that might have limited times of the day that they can check in and order.

I assume the sold out message is just the software's way of indicating that there's nothing for you to order yet.

Cheers,
fred

Is Rhys guaranteed allocation or first come first serve? Would like to be able to buy if I get an allocation but will be away from a computer all afternoon...

Now getting "Our Spring 2011 Release will be available shortly"

thanks for clarifying Kevin

This is only my fourth allocation, and I'm a "small baller" compared to most of you "ballers," but I got offered everything but Skyline & Swan which are out of my price range anyway (makes me feel better to justify it that way).

From my history...it depends.
Items like the Alpine Chardonnay or Home Vineyard pinot where 1-2 barrels may have been made...difficult for a small-budget person like me.

Horseshoe is/will be their biggest production vineyard moving forward, so decent chance on that one. Unless everyone ordering maxes out their wishlist on this one too...
No experience on Skyline or Swan Terrace pinot wishlisting.
This is the first Bearwallow release, so no history there either. Not sure what their production was, on that one.

Kevin, did I see the fall chard will be a "santa cruz mountains". this will be a blend of the alpine and horseshoe?
I like that. one was crispy tingly taut, one was loamy broad big. Some master blending potential. Info...tia.

I just don't get these threads about a winery's current offering going live.
This thread will hit two pages in an hour with everyone a) confessing (boasting) about what they got b)complaining about what they didn't get.
Maybe I'm just cranky today neener

Ordered everything that was allocated and wish listed everything that I could. Also added a case of Alesia for good measure. One of the few offers that I have no hesitation about.

What is everyone's opinion of the Alesia? My first and only exposure to this winery was back when I bought some 2004 Alesia Syrah and Pinot. They, quite honestly in my opinion, were nasty.

It seems that everyone loves the Rhys. Unfortunately, it looks like I will have to buy some Alesia in order to wishlist for Rhys.

RE: Alesia
Randy, I had the same experience with virtually all of the pre-2007 Alesia bottlings that I have purchased but I stuck with it as my interest in the Rhys line-up grew. Now that I'm offered much more Rhys, I'll buy Alesia just to fill a case (no need this time though). But I must say that the '07 Alesia Sonoma that I had last month was beautiful so I suggest giving them another try. [cheers.gif]

Todd,
Let's not find out the answer!
In all seriousness, Chard availability should improve. Also with Horseshoe coming online, we will have at least one Chard for each offering. So this is the last Chard-free release.

Highest number of users online ever at Wine Berserkers - Rhys offer comes out - coincidence?

The former record was set during the day the Rivers Marie offer was released...

I agree wit you Randy, the bottles I had were sulphur bombs, just horrid, but I mentioned that to the Rhys people who replaced them with other, more recent syrahs that did not suffer from this problem. The wines are good to great, so I would not give up based on that experience.

Remember that '04 (with the exception of an excellent '03 Syrah) was both their first commercial release and also a very hot vintage. And back then Alesia was made from purchased grapes (unlike Rhys). In general my consistent favorite for the Alesias was the Green Valley which wasn't produced that year.

I've been very excited by some of the Rhys pinots, others have been less to my taste. But they've all been interesting and show a dedication and attention to quality that I find impressive. As a result even for the ones I've found less interesting on release I wouldn't bet against them down the line. And the chardonnays are consistently excellent (speaking as someone who is rarely impressed by CA chardonnay).

In short - while I make no claims that you'll necessarily like the wines the '04 Alesias are not a good yardstick by which to judge them.
Ripe fruit isn't necessarily a flaw.

I can offer 2 things:

1. We had both syrahs in Falltacular this past weekend. I liked the Horseshoe but I can tell you the Skyline is stunning. I can't post over from Cellartracker today but my notes on both wines are over there. 2 words on the Skyline--BUY IT!

2. For anyone in the OC, I will have a few extra bottles from my order. If you are not able to get an allocation, contact me on PM and I can share a couple in the OC only.
My WOTY candidates for 2019:
2014 Marie Courtin Eloquence BdB Extra Brut
2017 Rivers-Marie PN Platt SC
2017 Kutch Pinot Noir SC PN
2009 Roederer Cristal Brut
2017 Carlisle Zin Mancini Ranch RRV

My best wines of 2018:
2017 Kutch Falstaff Sonoma Coast PN
2012 Marguet La Grande Ruelle Ambonnay

Kindness matters.
