I haven't had those Fontanafredda wines, but it was a period in which the winery's reputation was quite low. It had been owned by the bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena since the Depression, so not a lot of leadership in the vineyards or cellar. Some of the wines from the 70s are still very good, but wasn't even on anyone's B list in the 80s and 90s. Of course, some bottlings may have turned out well.

In 2009, Piemontese entrepreneur Oscar Farinetti (founder of Eataly, owner of old-line Barolo-maker Giacomo Borgogno, former owner of Lurisia mineral water) acquired control along with partners.

Weekly tasting riesling offer looks pretty good with the BOGO half off, comes out to ~$19 a bottle if you get 2 of the featured 2-packs (and less if you have any coupons). I know very little about riesling but seems like high QPR so went in for it. WTSO was selling those bottles for $28-30 last year, and 93-94 point scores from WE / WA.

Two Contucci Vino Nobile have popped up in the last few days. These are legit AFWE Tuscans and good deals at $25. Worth buying if they pop up again.

Any good?
I took a bunch because the 2000 Fontanafredda Lazzarito was excellent and this is supposed to be better. It was delivered Saturday and I will open one when the sediment dies down, BUT it will be off the board by then.
I opened one on Wednesday night. It needed a 4 hour decant minimum to start to blossom and by 5 hours it was outstanding. Truffles, dark cherries, forest floor and a nose of violets so strong that you could taste it.

Just put the Coravin into the 1996 Fontanafredda Barolo Lazzarito Vigna la Delizia and am quite happy. Its fully resolved with notes of soft red berries and the tiniest note of mint. Soft and pleasing, I went for four more.

Hi, I am a regular wtso buyer and was excited to see a community of people who shop there regularly. I am mainly a collector and drinker of Italian wines, which I see are not too popular within this community. More for me! My most important lesson from reading this thread was that I should be storing wine I buy if I find a great deal through the summer. I recently stored a few shipments to spread out because I think the fed ex guy is starting to worry about my drinking. My bottles of 2015 Donna Olga Brunello shipped yesterday and will be sitting on a truck from NJ until its delivery on Monday! Praying for cooler temps!

Request your wines to ship on Mondays from WTSO. Watch the weather. Have fun.

Welcome to the board! I think you’ll find that there’s a broad range of styles and devotees, including Italian wines. Recently, there was a lot of excitement around ‘16 produttori, ‘16 monsanto ccr, etc. I just got my first ‘15 Brunellos last week which is likely the last delivery I’ll take until September.

I've gotten some very good brunellos around $30 including a 2012 riserva recently that is excellent. Don't hesitate as they sell out pretty quickly. WTSO also a good source for white Sancerre at very reasonable prices. 2019 looks to be an excellent vintage for the Loire. Always ask that any applicable discount codes be applied-usually for 4 bottle minimum orders.

Thanks for the welcome and good advice! I have only ever recieved a 5 dollar discount for a friend referral. Where do I find out more about discounts? Because of this thread, I signed up for the sneak peek into "today's wine offers" and then saw that they will notify me via text if I have interest in a bottle! Love that!
Definitely will not make that mistake with a Friday plus warm weather delivery and will hold anything of interest until at least October. Last year was a scorcher well into the end of September! Luckily here in the midwest our temperatures cooled to 40s at night this past weekend. So hopefully my Brunello's were not harmed in transit.

Welcome. I have been buying from WTSO for years and I use it, in many situations, to try out a couple bottles of wine that I am unfamiliar with. My favorite was a bottle of 2002 Piper Heidsieck Rare, which I bought because the bottle looked like it belonged in a Bordello. It was free shipping for only one bottle, but when I put it into a blind flight with 2 other 2002 top of the line Champagnes, about two thirds of the group picked it as #1 of the flight, and a couple thought it was the best wine of the entire night.

You might want to consider adopting a similar approach when you can get free shipping on one bottle, or sometimes 3 bottles when the wine is inexpensive. Try something that is out of your wheelhouse and you might find that you like it.

Recently they have been offering many Barolos and Barbarescos and I think I have tried them all, or nearly with some very good results. I like buying like this, it reminds me of the early days of my journey when I would go into local stores and just browse for hours with no rhyme or reason. Wine buying was fun then. Free shipping, interesting wine and little guilt as most are under $40., Some well under.

What is this concept, with which I am totally unfamiliar. I thought that's what floors in the cellar were for and I thought that the floor outside the cellar door was the backup for the floor inside the cellar door.

Luckily for me, they haven't been able to sell/ship to Michigan since December. They have more good offerings than I need considering the cellar count is heading in the wrong direction from all of the local wine clubs anyway.

(Seriously though, WTSO - please fix whatever's going on with my dumb state so I can buy again)

Always ask for any applicable codes to be applied in the special instructions box when ordering. Very little available white Loire or Italian. Fortunately, they still have the JP Picard Sancerre in stock which we like.

this is what they sent to me a couple of weeks ago. We tried the other Sancerre last night and thought it a real deal for $15. I posted a brief TN on CT. Also got a bottle of the chard from Friuli to try.

Here is our current white offerings from Loire Valley and Italy.

JP Picard Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc 2019 (87163) $16.99
Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc 2019 Vignobles Verdier (87178) $14.99

Always ask for any applicable codes to be applied in the special instructions box when ordering. Very little available white Loire or Italian. Fortunately, they still have the JP Picard Sancerre in stock which we like.
I tried this trick, but they didn't do it for me. They just directed me to follow their Facebook page for promo codes.

Where do you see the Picard Sancerre? I really liked their rose, but they show up as sold out to me.
this is what they sent to me a couple of weeks ago. We tried the other Sancerre last night and thought it a real deal for $15. I posted a brief TN on CT. Also got a bottle of the chard from Friuli to try.

Here is our current white offerings from Loire Valley and Italy.
Tenuta Villa Nova Chardonnay DOC Friuli Isonzo 2015 (84726) $16.99
JP Picard Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc 2019 (87163) $16.99
Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc 2019 Vignobles Verdier (87178) $14.99
Domaine de Vaugondy Vouvray Sec 2015 (85127) $16.99
Hmm, can you clarify? You just e-mailed them for what they have available and they let you buy whatever?

Don't even have to be a long time customer don't believe.
Also, if you miss a wine that was up, they are seldom actually sold until they sell out. So same thing, just email and ask if in stock. If it is you can purcahse

If you do it this way, do you get free shipping on any number of bottles (like the Last Chance wines), or does the minimum from the flash sale apply to get free shipping?

I think it depends on the price point of the bottle. I ordered 3 $30 bottles after e-mailing and it came with free shipping. So I would probably ask.
