Top 5 pinot noir wines from California

#151 Post by Alan C h a n » October 25th, 2017, 12:25 pm

Copain Kiser en Haut
Arcadian (prob Garys’ for me)
Rhys Swan Terrace
Littorai

Tough fight for the fifth slot among Kutch, Ceritas, Williams Selyem... must do more testing. Also, Rivers Marie Summa OV is underrated and misunderstood by many here who made judgments while the wines were young imho - after aging these have surprised me in the past. Maybe one wonders what Ted Lemon would’ve done with the fruit but still...

lots of deserving wineries on here for sure. Some of my favorites have already been mentioned many times on here.
Does Windy Oaks get any love on here still? I remember they used to get a lot more mentions on WB.

Looks like I never responded the first time around so here goes;

Mt Eden Estate
Rhys Home Vineyard
Copain Kiser En Haut
Arcadian Gary's Vineyard
Ripe fruit isn't necessarily a flaw.

Where are you guys buying your Arcadian from?!!! I can't seem to find anything online like a mailing list.
I've been looking for their website for weeks now and haven't been able to find one.
Their website has been down for a while. Give 'em a call. They will email you a list of what's availability along with pricing. It's very much worth the little bit of effort.

Arcadian - Pisoni vnyd
{space}
Rhys - Horseshoe
{space}
Arcadian - Jill's Cuvee (retired) (assemblage not always the same, so perhaps shouldn't count)
Rhys - Alpine
Rhys - Bearwallow

Of note, I've yet to taste Swan Terrace, Home, or Skyline bottlings from Rhys.
Many Arcadian bottlings (Sleepy Hollow; Francesca's; Fiddlestix; Dierberg) would be in the running but for some vintage variation that I cannot ignore given the originally-stated "year-in-year-out" premise.

Why do I not see Marcassin in this thread?

For me the tops are Littorai, Rhys, Kutch and Mount Eden. I love Williams-Selyem and Morgan if we include early 90s. I think Joe has done an admirable job at Arcadian. I also like Paul Lato. FWIW.

Well it all depends on the style you like...for someone who prefers burgundy, among the one's I have tried these are ones that come close...

Au Bon Climat
Mt Eden
Copain
Domaine de la Cote

Heard a lot of great things about PNs made by Burt Williams, but have never tired one...

I may have missed it but hard for me to believe that no one mentioned Hansel which is one of my top three.
The others that I woulld include are Siduri, Delinger, Calera and Pisoni.

My choices are tempered by what I consider affordable,

In no particular order:

Littorai
Marcassin
Kistler
Williams Selyem
Peay

Other producers I love but who didn't make the cut for a variety of reasons:

Failla
Ceritas
Flowers
Hirsch

Wow! No love for Marcassin or Aubert. And lots of love for Wm Selyem under the original owners. I enjoyed WS in the 90s but stopped buying many years ago.. Are people saying that WS from the 90's is still drinking well? I recently had the opportunity to try a few early aughts: 2002, -03 and -04 Hirsch and they were all way past their windows.

Search Blake Brown's notes as he still opens lots of old WS. I imagine not everyone has had Marcassin or Aubert, or at least in a high enough volume in order to rank list it. I think this list is not based off one-off bottles - no matter how amazing - but moreso how consistently these producers have crafted quality Pinot Noir. Although ranking just 5 seems cruel as there are a lot of outstanding producers in California, my own personal top 5:

Arcadian, Morlet, Sea Smoke, Sojourn, Williams Selyem

I counted 3 on the first page alone.

Some of the newer producers I think make interesting PN's:

Ceritas has been mentioned many times. Lioco a few times. But no mention of Dragonette and Tyler - very good stuff. I also think Paul Lato belongs.

Rhys seems to be the overwhelming top 5 pick so I will have to give that a try. Have had lots of Siduri but wouldn't put them in my top wines, the Gary's is pretty decent but not even close to the real deal Pisoni:
Pisoni (easy number 1)
Sojourn
Rivers-Marie
B Cellars Manzana (not known for their Pinots but this is one of the best I've had. New world of course)
Lucia
