Your Top 3 Beers in 3 Categories Please ...

I have been away from the What Beer Are You Drinking Thread for a while, so I thought I’d try to catch up by throwing this out there for those who want to play.

No need to tie folks to three specific categories so you can pick three styles and/or geographic producers of your choosing and list your top three in each. Thanks!

stout: probably 2016 BA abraxas. A real hitter among a lot of BA stouts
IPA: Double Citra HillFarmstead
“sour”: 3f Zenne b1

Rochefort 10 - Best beer in the world.

Others
RRB Consecration
The Bruery - Tart of Darkness

Jason

Cantillon Iris
North Coast Old Stock Ale (preferably with some age on it)
Weihenstephaner Krystallweiss

Blauw
KBBS
Edward

Top three porters:

Founders Porter
Great Lakes Brewing - Edmund Fitzgerald Porter
Odell Cutthroat Porter

Just my opinion

Not sure if this counts as ‘three’ categories, but since it is all I drink then:

Stout - Bourbon County Stout

Barrel Aged Stout - Perennial Abraxas

Barley wine - Pipeworks Rohrwerker

The BA Abraxas is pretty killer, as is their BA Sump Coffee stout. However, I prefer Side Project 3 Candles. Available in brewery or tasting room only, aged three years in 4 Roses barrels, 15% BV, and served still!

VT style pale ales:

Hillfarmstead Susan
Hillfarmstead Edward
Frost Really Pale Ale
Upper Pass First Drop
Burlington Beer Co. Elaborate Metaphor

Sour: 3f Malvasia Rosso
Stout: De Molen Misto B.A. Hel and Verdomenis
IPA:La Cumbre Elevated

Thanks. Keep em coming!

They had 3 Candles at FWIBF one year and definitely enjoyed it.

Mexican Styled Lagers

  1. El Sully (21st Century)
  2. El Oso (Bear Republic)
  3. Pacifico

Heresy, I know.

I’ve been on a Belgian inspired kick for a while. If any of the beers below are on the taplist I’m drinking.

Belgian Quad

Westvleteren 12
La Trappe Oak Aged (easily sourced locally)
St. Bernardus abt 12 (easily sourced, and close to the W as reportedly the same recipe but still not quite the same)

Lambic/Kriek

Brasserie Cantillon Kriek 100% Lambic
Pfriem Oud Kriek
Double Mountain Tahoma Kriek

Belgian Strong Dark

Gouden Carolus Cuvée van de Keizer - Blauw
Pfriem Cognac Barrel Aged Belgian Style Dark Ale
Deschutes The Dissident (Oud Bruin)

American Wild Ale (put Devil’s Kriek here as it’s listed as an American Wild Ale in Untappd)

Russian River Consecration
Double Mountain Devil’s Kriek
Double Mountain Devil’s Cuvee Kriek (Oak Aged)

Nice! Any recs for lighter Belgians? Maybe more in the blonde or double style? I really enjoy these beers but struggle with the heavier ones.

Scott

Scott,

Here are some nice Oregon choices.

Double Mountain Tahoma Kriek (sour strong blond with Tahoma cherries)
Pfriem Strong Blonde (easy to find on the shelf in Oregon grocery stores)

Excellent Belgian Strong Golden’s you can find at a good beer store

Gulden Draak Brewmasters Edition
Brouwerij De Dolle Brouwers Stille Nacht
Brouwerij De Dolle Brouwers Boskeun

Double’s

Chimay Rouge (Première)
Maredsous 8° Brune
St Bernardus Prior 8

All of the Double Mountain Kriek’s should work for you, as long as you don’t mind moderately sour brews.

Don’t ignore Saison’s, such as:

Firestone Walker L’il Opal (fantastic!)
Pfriem Barrel Aged is a fantastic example as is their Super Saison (these may be very tough to find outside of Oregon).
Logsdon Seizoen Bretta

A big pet peeve of mine is when people do not properly read the question. I am guilty here. Sorry.

I’ll take a proper shot at this later.

Jason

I read it as top 3 beers per category… I couldn’t settle on just 3 categories so I chose 4. I also wanted to make sure beers which most can source were included.

It’s winter so there are a couple of winter releases here. You pick the category because at least two of these don’t really fit any category folks would place them in normally.

Anchor Christmas Ale
Founders Breakfast Stout
Deschutes Red Chair - I haven’t actually bought any yet this season but I cannot wait. Easily my favorite release every year. I wish it was released in spring for summer.
