Best way to store single malt, bourbon, spirits long term?

Hello folks,
I’m a wine guy who accumulates some bourbon, single malt and other spirits every year. Some are collectible/hard to come by (Talkin’ to you, George T. Stagg) and some are just good drinking.

What’s the best way to store these long term? (years, not months). I assume cooler is better, drier is worser.

Bottles vertical or lying down?
Kept cool in a wine cellar ~ 55F , 40=50% humidity? Or basement closet at room temps, ~ 70F?

These all have cork closures.
Thanks in advance.

This should do it.

Thank you Sarah, this is a great help. It sounds like “dark and cool” is the key.

Folks, and thoughts on storing upright vs. horizontal?

My guess is that the higher alcohol of whisk(e)y will degrade a cork much faster than wine.

I would not store whisk(e)y on its side. It will degrade the cork.

Do you need parafilm/sealant if the bottle hasn’t been opened?
