Earth Tones for Wineries

I just saw an article in Wine Business Monthly that Napa is considering requiring wineries to be colored in earth tones. Skipping over how one determines what is an earth tone. A similar proposal was made for Santa Barbara County Wineries a couple of years ago. When we pointed out that solar panels come in silver or black but not earth tones this proposal was dropped. Traditionally, cattle and horse ranches had red barns. We planted our vineyard on a horse ranch and our barn is still red. Similarly, dairies have white barns. In the Santa Rita Hills there used to be a lot of dairies. The last dairy was planted to a vineyard and the traditional white circular silo was retained and forms the basis of the winery and tasting room. It is still white. The Santa Rita Hills was under the ocean and the collision of the North American Plate and the Pacific Plate pushed it to the surface. There is a lot of calcareous shale which had it stayed under the ocean would have been limestone. When you drive around the SRH you see a lot of white on the sides of hills where the earth washed away and exposed the calcareous shale. Finally, if the structure can’t be seen from a public road, why does anybody care what color it is painted?

You make some very valid points but how does a municipality say to its residents that if your structures are visible from the road you are allowed these colors and if the structures are not visible from the road you are allowed these colors? It seems to me that all they are trying to do is get a handle on a potential esthetic issue and kudos to them for being proactive as opposed to reactive
