Looking back on the '03s

Hi Terry,
I was curious if you’d checked in on many 2003s from Germany or Austria lately, and how the wines are doing in bottle at this stage? Any surprises, or producers standing out whose wines may have gone under the radar initially that vintage?

The ones that were good in the first place - a number larger than most people imagined at the time - are just starting to show secondary flavors of beeswax, acacia and chamomile. I love those flavors. (I’d walk a mile for a chamomile.) I see no reason to delay drinking Kabs and Späts but also no reason for undue haste.

Yes there are flabby wines. Of course. But the whole vintage was misunderstood, and its best wines will be monumental.

Germany, as a whole, is better than Austria.
