Augusta, Georgia - restaurant suggestions?

I suspect this is a stretch, but if anyone has dining suggestions for Augusta, it would be much appreciated.

We used to live across the river in Aiken SC and for a nice meal we went to Cadwalladers Cafe.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been there as we moved away years ago, but I see they are still in business and the reviews are still good.

If Cajun/Creole sounds good, I suggest French Market Grille West. http://www.frenchmarketwest.com/Default.aspx
I haven’t been there, but know exec.chef and operatiing partner Jim Beck from a restaurant in Atlanta, Taste of New Orleans, that he used to run with his father and brother. T.O.N.O was very good, and I would expect the same of French Market Grille.

For a more upscale experience, you might try La Maison on Telfair, http://www.lamaisontelfair.com/Home.html
Again, I haven’t dined there but I know it enjoys a good reputation - and I fondly remember chef-owner Heinz Sowinski’s former Atlanta restaurant, The Brass Key.

Bon appetit,

Bob

Many thanks, Bob and Marc - I will report back on what we do - a couple of nights on business with a couple of other people, so it might not be my decision alone!

I well remember Taste of New Orleans from when I lived in Atlanta 20 years ago. It was certainly a very good place back when.

Timely post, just found out I’ll be in Augusta the second week in April 2014 champagne.gif champagne.gif champagne.gif

What about the Mess hall #2 at Fort Gordon, it was named “Best in the Army”. I doubt the wine list has much to offer.

Agreeing with Marc and Robert, and I used to dine at both of these spots once a month for 3 years, Caldwalladers and Le Maison are both great spots! Cadwalladers only marks their wine up about $10 over cost, so you end up buying several bottles because the price is so fair. The Chef/Owner at Le Maison is an incredible guy and makes some killer food! Definitely more upscale, but worth it.

If you want BBQ try Sconyers. Its not great (seriously) but you can’t do better in the area.

Avoid the brisket, ribs and pork (seriously) and branch out and try the hash (more of a SC specialty), turkey and chicken. Or don’t go at all!

Unfortunately, work obligations prevented me from influencing the dining decisions too much.

Had a very nice burger at Farmhaus (and a pretty nifty peach & caramel shake, too).
Also had some nice Mex at Roosters Beak - pretty limited menu, but good and vegetarian friendly for those who care.
Drank a lot at Whiskey Bar, which I thought was a pretty cool place.

I will look forward to returning sooner than later so I can try out some of the suggestions.

They roll up the sidewalks at about 5:00 in downtown Augusta.
