What an opportunity to own a beautiful wine and spend time on the property with the passionate people that made the wine in a personal setting. Just driving to the Big Basin Winery is spectacular buried in the redwood groves overlooking Santa Cruz. Bella!
  • One Magnum (1.5L) of 2015 Big Basin Sixty-Two Terraces Syrah
  • Private Tour and Tasting for four (4) with our Winemaker Blake or Proprietor Bradley

A little about the wine
Sixty-Two Terraces is made up of two steeply terraced blocks that start just above the winery and continue almost to the top of the ridge. The north-south rows create the terraces with an eastern exposure. The poor, rocky ridge top soils make for very low yielding vines with small clusters of fruit with smaller berries. The resulting wine is typically some of the more intense Syrah that comes out of our vineyard. This is our first vintage of the Sixty-Two Terraces Syrah. 2015 was a year with painfully low yields, but delivered concentrated and distinctive wines. The fourth year of drought combined with cold, wet weather during flowering kept berry size small, intensifying flavors and forming supple tannins. We aged this wine exclusively in 300 liter hogs heads, with two out of five being new very tight grain French oak with a long light toast. We have found this particular combination provides the greatest transparency and least noticeable oak impact. We also upped the percentage of whole clusters used in the fermentations which lifts the aromatic profile while adding some structure to the wine.
A little about the tour
A Private Tour and Tasting for four (4) with our Winemaker. Located in the hearts of the Santa Cruz Mountains, one of California’s oldest AVAs, our Estate Vineyard and Winery is nestled in the serene beauty of sunny vineyards and the surrounding redwood forest. Enjoy a flight on our vineyard adjacent patio and join our winemaker for an informative tour of our vineyard and winery. Experience the story behind the wines in your glass, from the history of our vineyards and the unique Santa Cruz Mountains (and Gabilan Mountains) terroir, to our CCOF certified farming practices and our minimal intervention winemaking philosophy. Must be scheduled in advance. Tour will be with either Proprietor Bradley Brown or Winemaker Blake Yarger.
