Clos des Oiseaux was the name Walter Scott Wines gave to this steep, 2.8 acre parcel just South of the Jessie Block of Cristom off Spring Valley Road on the Eastern flank of the Eola-Amity Hills. They implemented organic farming practices on the teenage vines when the first leased it in 2011 until 2017 when they moved on from their lease (sadly for those of us who enjoy the distinctive character of the wines).
Ken and Erica shared part of their crop with me in 2014 and 2015 when I was working with them at Walter Scott. We pick the entire site at once, bringing all three of the clonal selections to each fermenter in equal parts. I used the top section of Dijon 115 as whole cluster, making the cuvée around 20% as a whole. In each vintage I was able to produce four barrels--three would go to a Clos designate wine and one would go to the Eola-Amity selection. In addition, I would bottle, label and wax 18 magnums by hand.
The vineyard produces silky textures more like Dundee Hills, (deeper volcanic soils quite similar here), with a softer acid perception lending a velvety curve to the wine. The aromatic/flavor profiles border on the exotic, with plenty of earthier, savory tones to balance deeper, spiced raspberries and red fruits. Again, a nervy edge to balance the more opulent side of the fruit profile.
This wine has been sold out for a few years and remains a personal favorite of mine. All my magnums have been available for $100 per bottle in every vintage, for those customers who are able to visit personally or during open houses.
This wine is a gem, and has never been available in the marketplace.
